Two Problems ----

I just got the lower intake off, while pulling the lower intake off little rusted pieces of metal and dirt and coolant slipped right inside on top of the heads or whatever is underneath the lower intake  Whats the best way to clean this mess up?

problem 2 - The lower manifold bolt thats right next to the thermostat broke off and half of it is stuck inside the thread.....How can i get this out?

Thanks Guys

Yikes metal flakes fell into the heads huh. What were the metal flakes from? Did it actually fall into the intake side of the heads or into the lifter valley under the intake? You might be able to get the broken bolt out with an easy out kit. Otherwise you'll need to drill the hole out and replace it with a heli coil insert. As far as the metal flakes go how big were they? If they went into the lifter valley you should be able to clean up the valley. First remove the valve train, rockers and pushrods, remove the dog bone lifter retainer and all the dog bones followed by all the lifters. Get a can of carb cleaner and shoot it on the lifter valley and through the lifter holes. In doing this it should push all the crap into the oil pan. Always drain the oil afterwards as coolant and any cleaner you use will wind up there. If the metal fell into the head itself that is a bigger problem as if it fell into a cylinder of which one of the valves was open the metal is most likely sitting on top of one of the pistons. The only way to get that out of there is to remove the intake and exhaust valves and try and fish it out with a magnet. Make sure theres nothing in the combustion chamber when you fire it back up. Otherwise you will have big problems

Yeah thanks bro, its kinda fun working on these 302's [Big Grin] Yeah im gonna 1st try to clean it as much as i can.... Then vacuum the area really well then drop little oil and then suck it back out on top of the block -- I heard its normal for dirt and oil to fall down when removing the lower intake i mean you cant just lift the intake out - You have to wiggle it out forcing dirt to fall...

About the bolt - I'll get an easy out kit hopefully it comes off then the Performer intake till go on [Big Grin]

You guys know the right torque numbers for the bolts for the lower intake manifold? 18-20 pounds?

Thanks

I'd probably pull the head on the side the metal fell into and clean it up the hard way [Frown]

never, ever use an easy out kit. It will make an easy to drill out bolt impossible once (if) you break off a hardened steel easy out in there. Just my $0.01

No, its but big pieces of metal.. Its like the little pieces of the built up dirt and gasket pieces and just plain small tiny rocks size of sand just slipped down - Since oil was already there, it got mixed in the oil and i couldnt just wipe it off ...

Theres nothing bigger then 1/8 inch wider or longer -

Then how do i take out the broken rusted bolt?

lots of WD-40, maybe some vice grips, maybe dremel a slot into it for a large flat screwdriver...

if that fails, grind it flat enough to weld a nut onto it, that never fails.

last resort--- drill it out. Drilling out even a grade 8 bolt is 100000x easier than drilling out a broken off easy out [Frown]

Yes if you break the easy out in the hole its not cool. It would be a major pain to than drill the easy out bit out. Just don't over torque the easy out. Welding to the bolt works if there is some stub sticking up. Otherwise you can't weld to it without catching the head with the weld. These bolts are only 5/16" so getting a dremel bit in there I think is next to impossible as the diameter is smaller than any dremel bits I've seen.

if you use easy out, make sure you drill deep enough and use the right drill bit for the right size easy out bit. i made the mistake of using the bit that was too big, and broke it off. it was for a bolt for my timing cover, it's still in there, just flush with the block. I was going to try the easy out again tho.

Yeah I learned the hard way. I used an Autozone EZ out and the bit broke inside the broken bolt. No machine shop was able to remove and I had to take it to some shop that does work for the aerospace industry and they had to remove it with lasers. Since I was selling the heads I didn't want it to look like a thread had been damaged. They did take it out with the threads being perfectly fine but it cost me $60.
