Ok, i've heard before that the hotter your engine is running, the cleaner your emissions are. This is because your cats need the heat to burn off extra hydrocarbons, right? Well, would it do any good for an emmissions test to wrap the headers, X pipe (forward of the cats), and the cats with fire-proof cloth or tape to retain as much heat as possible or would this hardly make a difference?

Depending on the placement of the cats, they generally heat up to operating temp. within 30-60 seconds. Too much heat, and you'll melt the catalyst inside. Wrapping the headers will get you some extra ponies, but as far as being more emmissions friendly, I don't think it'll do anything of the sort.

I know wrapping the headers will reduce engine compartment temps, but how does it give you more HP?

Cooler Intake charge=more power. I.E. your intake draws heat from the engine compartment, the engine compartment cools down and so does the intake charge, although it's not worth the time in my opinion.

Close, but not quite. Wrapping the headers makes them retain the heat inside the headers, rather than acting like a radiator. The theory behind it is, the hotter the gasses, the quicker they flow away from the exhaust port. The faster the gasses flow out of the combustion chamber, and exhaust port, it creates a lower pressue inside the combustion chamber to help pull in the incoming intake charge when both the exhaust and intake valve are open for that split second.

The idea of getting the engine or combustion chamber hotter might have work with the old test where we only tested for hydrocarbons(HC) and carbon monoxide(CO). Now we test for NOx as well, NOx actually INCREASES the hotter the combustion chamber temp is. Superheating the cats might work but, having the car in good tune with a good set of cats would probably do more to help your cause.
