I know this may be a little bit of an odd one for you guys here, but I really need some help. I have a '98 Explorer Sport 4.0 OHV.
K&N cone filter
Pro-M 75mm
BBK 66mm TB
24lb inj
155 lph fuel booster
JBA header
Flowmaster cat back
Apten chip
Vortech V-1
4:1 FMU
From what I gather thus far all the pieces are in place. For some reason they just don't fit. I have taken it to the dyno on three seperate occasions to get some data to have my chip reburned with no luck. At this present time I am lacking appx 40 rwhp. Compared to similar vehicles with similar mods. My fuel pressure at idle is about 30psi. I am unable to monitor the fuel pressure at higher RPM at this time to see if the FMU is doing it's job. I'm really out on a limb here. This forced induction world is pretty new to me and way beyond my knowledge. [Confused] I have another dyno appt with BRG racing in Concard on Fri. What to do? Anyone got some time on thier hands? Have knowledge of EEC-V, just plain bored and want to head out to the dyno? Please.!.! Tis the season as they say. [worship]
Thanks for any input,
Jeff

let's see your dyno graphs
you don't have a fuel pressure gauge in the car?
with a boosted ride, a fp gauge is pretty necessary imo

Yeah, time to invest in some mods to monitor and protect your investment.

To save you guys some web server space, and me some time I'll enclose the link to the thread. I totaly agree with the F/P gauge. I have a boost gauge that needs to be installed and I am looking for a Fuel gauge. Funding is tough these days. " A dogs gotta eat"
The dyno pages can be found on pages 4-5
Explorer forum thread

Thanks for any of your help guys
Jeff

Tell us some more about your mods. What do you have for ignition? What plugs are you using and what are they gapped at??
Is the 155lph fuel pump in the tank or is it an external booster pump?
Did you let Brian know that you are using the FMU and what the calibration ratio is on it (4:1)? Usually when you go larger injectors and custom chip you ditch the FMU. The FMU blocks the fuel return to the tank under boost forcing fuel pressure WAY up. This forces the injectors to spray more fuel. The custom chip on the other hand increases the duty cycle of the injectors under boost to allow for more fuel. Use the two together and you get pig rich since the injectors are working over time at VERY high pressure and they dump way too much fuel.
Look at dyno graphs 008 and 009. 008 went WAY rich when it got in to boost and your power suffered. You disconnected the vac line to the FMU on 009 (essentially turning the FMU off and just letting the chip work) and your power increased when your AF ratio settled at 12.5:1.

Now, I'm not a supercharger guru but this is just what I noticed. I'll let others chime in with their thoughts.

Brian is a great guy and knows his stuff. I have an Apten in my Mustang. It used to be in my Explorer but I wasn't happy with the minimal gains in a stock 4.0 and decided my Mustang could better use the chip. Brian reburned it for me no charge and got the Mustang running great based on an Apex dyno pull.

The ignition is stock, I have switched my plugs they are Motorcraft AGSF12FM1's. These are a cooler platinum plug they use in a lightning. The fuel pump in an external booster. Brian does know that I am using an FMU. We have every intent of ditching the FMU. I decided to leave the FMU installed for some extra protection while the fuel system is so unstable. After I visited the dyno this past Fri I realized that the FMU is'nt doing anything anyways. It doesn't start to raise fuel pressure until 4000 RPM where is goes from 40 psig to 60psig. At 4900 rpm it was up to 75psig. It seems to be apparent that fuel pressure isn't a problem. Rather injetcor control duration. It starts a mild ping at 3000 rpm and tends to get progressivly worse to 3500rpm.
