This car is a basically stock 89 lx. Once it gets warm it has a hard time keeping a steady idle. It drops and fights as long as it can to stay on but eventually cuts out. Usually I can get it to stay on by acceletating out of the surging idle. Often times I can hear a back firing of the intake when I try to keep it going using the accelerator. Once the engine gets past the idle rpm range or I get the car itself moving, everything goes pretty good from there. Again, its the idle/off idle range that is giving me problems. I have checked for vac.leaks,tps(.940V),another mas,and a complete tune up. I am ready to replace the whole motor! This motor has less than 100K.You tell me. Thanks

Have you cleaned or replaced the Idle Air Bypass on the side of the throttle body? They can get gunked up and stick or fail. This is what helps keep the car running when the throttle plate is closed. You can remove it from the throttle body with two screws then shoot carb or throttle body cleaner in to it and flush it out.

How is the idle on cold start up? It only surges when the car is warm?

Did you replace the PCV valve when you did your tune up? A worn or stuck PCV valve can allow too much flow from the crank case causing a lean condition. This can exhibit all of the symptoms you describe (warm idle surge, lean backfire, misfire).

Get one from the dealer. They are only like $8 and are the right one for your car rather than a generic $3 valve from the auto store.

Well, it runs fine now...for now. It has been running good for two days now(around 50 miles). Maybe the car takes some time to realize that the IAB was cleaned out? I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanx for the input.
