Figured I'd run this by the board...been readin' about this most of the evening...

Today, I installed a set of 1.7's on a iron GT-40 set-up (stock short block 90's 5.0). The correct pushrods were utilized and all was set up correctly (proper hardware). Here's my question..

If there is excessive lifer pre-load, would it cause a slight backfire (through the tail pipes) on decelaration? I'm thinking yes, and shims *may* need to be used...

Lemme know what you think- shims, yes...or no? If yes, what would you use? .030, .060, or .090?

The mods to the car are as follows- Cobra upper and lower, stock injectors, stock cam, GT-40 Irons, 1.7 rockers, 65mm TB, 73mm MAF (I think!) and base timing at 12*. (Note: I'm going to knock the timing back to 10* tomorrow, see if this helps any [Smile] )

From 0 lash, proper lifter preload is achived with 1/2 turn. Anything more needed to tighten the RR's down is too much preload & shims should be used.
Start with .030 shims first.

Too much preload will cause the valves to hang open.
