Also some automatic tranny's(mostly race ones or HD ones i am thinking) that have a first gear ratio of 1.3 or something like that. Know of an LS1 that uses 5.14 gears, but his first gear is 1.2 or something.

they are used when the rear tire diameter is much larger than stock, such as real drag slicks, like 32x15x15's and the final speed, RPM and track length. You want to achieve your final RPM going through the lights with a given tire size and if they are pretty tall and the final RPM is pretty high and so on, then 6.14's might be needed, but that is pretty low. I usually end-up installing anything from 4.71's to 5.36's in cars we build depending on what tire size the car has and what the final RPM is going to be going through the lights. Another good application for gears like that are trucks with really large diameter mud tires. Just remember, the larger you go in tire size, (diameter), the taller it makes your gears, so you need to compensate for it.
