I have heard that the Tremec transmissions are notchy and a little clumsy to shift. Anyone own a Tremec and have an opinion on their performance? I am looking specifically at the TKO. Do they still shift better than the T5? thanks

I've heard they're both pretty "notchy" especially during the first 500-100 miles.
I might have first-hand info on the 3550 real soon. THEBRAIN has a TKO in his fox 'vert with a 331 (posts here).

Yeah, people talk both ways. It seems that GM syncromesh fluid and a thousand miles of break in will have you shifting just fine. I've heard some people blame the Pro 5.O shifter claiming its too short, thus not giving enough leverage for the driver to shift and making it seem notchy. I guess the Steeda's have a longer handle and the extra leverage eliminates this problem. You're probably better off posting this on www.corral.net.forums and/or searching their archives.

I've got the 3550 w/syncromesh & it's pretty notchy. It's also quite loud. Very stout tranny's. Never had any problems with it... (yet). Some say after powershifting 1st-2nd, it's very difficult to downshift from 3rd-2nd. I've actually seen a few that don't downshift from 3rd to 2nd at all.

I have a TKO in my '89 and LOVE IT !!!!!! When I first got it, it was a bit notchy and I didn't downshift for the first 1500 miles. Now I have about 15K miles on it and it downshifts smoother than any T-5 I have ever driven and powershifting is VERY easy. I have NO PROBLEMS downshifting from any gear to any gear within reason (4th to 3rd, 4th to 2nd, 3rd to 1st etc.......) I will NEVER go back to a T-5 again !!!!!!!!
Hope this helps Brian

Part of that notchy shifting is from the massive size of the gears. They make the T-5 gears look like toys. My old TKO smoothed out after a while but was never as smooth as my T-5. Maybe the fact that the Tremecs are so much stronger than a T-5, due to the gear size, will make it feel smoother now .

TKO is like 450 ft.lbs of torque I think? But the 3550 is compatible with standard T5 clutches and things like that, even one safety bellhousing that works on both (McCleod). It's basically a straight bolt in and if you have a TKO about the only think that you can keep is your stock driveshaft.
supposedly it comes with a yoke that mates to your stock driveshaft, but bell, shifter, clutch, all are unique to a TKO.

Thanks for the input. Also, the TKO is rated at 525 ft/lbs of torque. Rated in torque rather than horsepower, because that is where the transmission is getting all the beating is in the torque.

Tremec's routinely take more power (& perform flawlessly) than they are rated for.

Everything about the TKO and 3550 are the same except for the input and output shafts which are bigger on the TKO. The internals are identical as is the shifter and the bellhousing required. The TKO needs a different clutch disk (actually a chebby disk) and driveshaft yoke (a C6 which is usually supplied with the trans). The TKO is stronger than the 3550 but they both run circles around the T-5.
