Following the "haynes manual" there are two off colored links on the timing chains which are supposed to line up with a notch on the cam sprocket and the other to a notch on the crank sprocket...well the cams are supposed to be at "top dead center" and the crank notch is supposed to be at "6 o'clock" which if all fine, but the 2 off colored links don't line up to the notches like they are supposed to when the crank and cams are in position. ???Anyone done this before? have any pointers? I dont want to bend my new valves! BTW I am trying to do this without a cam retainer.

well when I checked mine they seem to line up fine with all the markeings
you put the crank pullie to 6 o clock then just line up the chain mark with the marks on the cam just make sure when you put the crank pullie at TDC

Well I can get the copperlinks lined upat the TDC marks on the cams and the 6'oclock mark on the cranck but there is too much slack on the guide side and no slack on the tensioner side of the chain. Is this normal? the crank will move without the cams until all the slack is on the tensioner side? I really dont want to screw up at this point after all I've done to the valve train. Thanks Any Ideas anyone? I have a shitty haynes manual, if any one has a chiltons book they can scan it might help me out!

You sure you got everything in right you should have to spin the cam a little to get the marks into the right position and then you should be able to put the guides in and hold them with your fingers and then install the tentioner. Its fairly simple and i've done it dozens of times and havent has a problem. make sure you have the right gears in order on the crank and to install the drivers side first.
