the tool is like $20 at sears. If you can remove spark plugs, you can run a compression test.

my advice, run motor for 5 minutes, let it cool for 10. Then do one side. Run for another 5 minutes, cool for ten, and do the other side.

if you really need help, stop by and I can show you. a remote starter (another $10 at sears) comes in handy also, cause you need to turn the motor over a few times---- and of course you disconnected the coil wire so it doesn't actually start [patriot]

Super easy test. Like shade said, go to Kragens/PepBoys and buy their $30-40 screw-in style engine compression tester. The kind that you just hold against the plug hole isn't accurate.

Then with a warm engine (not too hot), disconnect the coil, then one at a time, take out a spark plug, screw the tester in, crank the engine over for 2 seconds or so, record the reading, remove tester, replace plug, move on to the next one.

All your readings should be within 10% of each other if 1-2 of them are a lot lower than the others, that can indicate leaking rings, leaking head gasket, or damaged valve seats. The whole process should only take about 1/2 hour, for you unlucky bastards who have 8 cylinders to check. [Razz]

shade- you've got PM bro, thanks.

wolf- right on! thanks for more info-- how you liking the sv?? i'm thinkin about buying one that's raced out...i had crashed last year once at Sears and at T-hill, which did me in for now. Want to race AFM in the 650 class...

jmc- i've got a vaccum leak at the moment. but before i had the leak, the car already ran like it was running on 4cyl. before the problem which includes heating ...the engine is just crap.
