Finally after 4 months I got my car started with a bran spanking new motor. I broke the cam in with 20 mins at 1900 rpm. It seemed to run good above 1800 but a cannot set the idle below that. The car would sputter and die. It looked like it was shooting gas out the top of the carb from two little blow off valves that looked like needles when you would let off the gas. We have the screws set to the rich side so as not to damager the motor with a lean condition. Could this be the problem? By the way, the car with just headers and stock 93 Cobra exhaust sounded mean. Thanks for the help in advance.

Pete

What fuel pump? Any regulator? Sounds like too much fuel pressure.

They dont like much more than 5.5 to 7psi of fuel pressure.

You will be soo much happier with a holley, but I know I know how things can be [Frown]

I have one you can borrow a nice little holley just to get it tuned broken in and running.

The offer stands.

Also unhook your vaccuum line going to the dist advance. If that is hooked up and on the wrong port on the edl carb it will not idle under 1500 for shit. Unhook it and plug the end on the vaccuum side to see if this helps.

Lots of things to watch for man hope I can help.

dan.

I had the same problem with my 600 edelbrock a
few years back in my sbc cj 7. It was what punk
inslwo5.0 said. The vac advance was hooked up to the full vac output nipple instead of the ported
vac nipple. try the ported vac nipple and I bet
it purrs like a kitten. If not then it sounds like
a timing issue.

I have an aftermarket pump and no regulator. I am thinking this could be my problem. I would love to try a holley 600 but I had one and it was a pain in the ass. No offense to anyone but the choke would stay on too long, could not get the four throats to kick in hard, all kinds of problems. Anyway, I will try to some of the things you guys are saying. I am going to buy a regulato and gauge tommorrow. Anyone know where I can get one? Autozone, kragen, napa. who's gottem. Thanks again for all the help.

I tried pluggin the egr port on the carb. There are two ports in the front. One EGR and one timed advance. I plugged the egr and this helped it. I t idled a little lower but it was going up and down like crazy. it would drop to 1100 and then rise to 1500. Engine felt very choppy. I played with it a little and then noticed the cat on the drivers side was glowwing-very bad. This usually means I am running rich but it was only on one side. The header is bran new and started to discolor, the pass. side is fine. I have never taken on a project like this so everything I learn is a first time basis. I just thank you guys for all your advice.

Edelbrock carbs are great for stick cars. Especially when the emergency brake cable is broke and you need something to put behind the tire so it won't roll away. When it comes to tire chalks, nothing beats an Ededbrock carb.

If your idle is rising and falling it sounds like your have a vacuum leak at the carb base.

First things first, you gotta stop fuel from shooting out of the vent tubes. If you are running an electric fuel pump chances are you will need a fuel pressure regulator. You can pick up a cheap one at napa or krapen(kragen) or buy a nice one from your favorite speed shop. E-brocks like 5.5-6psi of fuel pressure. If this does not solve the problem the floats are to blame, E-brocks are a bit more involved than Holleys, the process should be outlined in the manual that came with your edelbrock. If you still have problems after this, you may have a vaccum leak somewhere. A note on Edelbrock/Carter/Webber(look at the side of your edelbrock) carbs; these are actually a much better street carb than a Holley, they give better fuel economy, give better intitial throttle response, (should) idle better and DONT LEAK. The Holley is a better race carb(Vic Jr. himself uses Holleys on his RACE car) the Edelbrock is a better street carb. Just curious- how are you getting this thing thru smog?

Thanks for the reply and info. I am using the stock EGR plate that goes in between the manifold and the carb. All the rest of the vacumn hooked up. As far as part numbers and CARB bs I do not know if it will pass a visual. I know it will pass the sniffer though. My stock single exhaust had only one cat and my h pipe has four. The only thing I could not retain was the EGR from the factory puke manifolds. I have a bad feeling about that but oh well. I will go fetch a regulator tommorow with a liquid filled gauge and let everyone know how it goes.
