I just bought a 306 short block with a comp cams cam with .510 lift. It is a bran new cam but I need to pass smog. I have a stock 93 Cobra camshaft in my garage. I am putting GT-40 cast iron heads, hopefully ported, an Edlebrock intake and a new 600 cfm carb on an 83 Mustang. I want to run a 100 shot of nitrous just for fun. What is the best cam for the job. What are the differences between a stock gt cam and a Cobra. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Anyone in Sac do good port jobs on heads?

Pete

All the guy told me was that it had .510 inches of lift, I am going to get on comp cams web site to see which one of there cams fits that.

One cam fit what the guy told me. It was for a block that was originally flat tappet and wanted to switch to a roller setup. Its op range was 2500-5500 and the numbers read like this-281/281 220/220 .512 and 110 of lobe. I am leaning towards just gettin an E cam.

You can do better than an E cam if you go off the shelf. A crane 2030/2031 was designed for GT40 irons, and I'm sure there are even better off the shelf picks for your combo. If porting is going to cost you a few hundred $$$, you're better off just selling the heads and putting your porting money towards a set of new heads. I guess it comes down to..... whats your budget?

the limited duration of that cam.... sounds to me like it will smog.

are you just trying to pass smog, then slap something beefier in there?

so this is a roller converted block? (with the mini base circle cams?)

that limits your cam options... incredibly. But comp cam will have a few.

The cam is a magnum 280h series comp cam. There is 280\230 at .500 inches of lift.

I got the heads for free so if I had to pay two hundred to port them, not a big deal. I am on a budget so I will probably just stay with this cam. Can I use stock used Cobra lifters with this cam. Or should I just order up some new ones from crane? I heard you can reuse lifters on roller cams. Thanks for all the advice.
