Just to let you know it is illegal to buy a puppy in California that is less than 8 weeks old. At 2-4 weeks old the puppy has not weaned off their mother. There are special circumstances to this but a responsible breeder in California won't sell them until they are 8 weeks.

Whatever you do please do not take a puppy that is THAT young!! To many reasons to leave it with the mother for at the very least 6-8 weeks in my opinion. 2-4 weeks that thing most likely can't walk or see yet. Plus the cold weather it will need the mother for some time, shots too before being sold or given away.

Best of luck with your search though, what a perfect gift for you lady...just try not to get the dog that young. [patriot] [patriot]

edit* guess someone beat me to it.

Depending on the dogs breed, a 6 to 8 week old dog is still small and "cute"

I just got a rottweiler mix thats 12mo old. Go to Animal Care and Control in San Francisco, its at the corner of Harrision and 15th street, downtown. They have all kinds of dogs for adoptoion. Its around 107 bucks which includes nuturing/spaying, microship, registration, shots, and most important, paperwork!. I picked up my Rott from them and you can play with the dogs to see if you're comfortable with it or not.
