Planning the largest Mustang convoy drive ever is a job that requires a lot of teamwork and enthusiasm from points all across the spectrum of the Mustang hobby. For the big 40th Anniversary Drive organized by Mustangs Across America in April of 2004, the labor of love is paying off. In November, the event is well on their way to an expected 300 Mustangs in the group with 124 registered participants from over 27 states and 4 countries. Participants from all over the United States will be meeting up with the convoy along Interstate 40 from Los Angeles, California to Nashville, TN during the five day tour that ends at the MCA Mustang 40th Anniversary Celebration. Many Mustangers from the east coast have registered who intend to drive all the way to California just to drive the trip back!
Working with clubs in several key cities along the way, activities and get-togethers are planned each day where participants and locals alike will be drawn into the rolling car show that spans the heartland. Participants in the event are proving to be an interesting lot. “We are really seeing a convergence of Mustang enthusiasts from all walks of life, all ages, and with cars of all vintages from the ‘60’s to brand new”, says MAA Vice President Tony Sousa. “Where else in our lives do we get the chance to get people of three and four generations together for an event where everyone is on the same quest for adventure and excitement”
With an even 50/50 balance of vintage Mustangs and late model cars that includes a significant contingent of brand new Mach 1’s, Cobras, and tuner cars the parade will surely be a vision to remember. The event will be paced by an all new Roush 380R Convertible provided by Roush Performance of Livonia, Michigan. With 380+ horsepower and a race bred suspension along with a dream list of upgrades the car is one of the fastest tuner Mustangs available from a dealer showroom today.
The event is organized into days that average 400 miles with scheduled stops for breaks, fuel, and lunch. Registrants will have the famous MAA travel guide with exact mileages and times for the tour along with detailed listings of services, trip information, and places to get a tourist degree. In the evenings ideal locations have been scouted out that will be home base for participants with discounted hotel rates and organized functions. Mustangs Across America is now on their fourth major cross country event in ten years that encompasses the numbers of Mustang and mileage that the 40th Anniversary Drive entails. The team is probably the most experienced at negotiating the many challenges and joys as anyone in the hobby.
