Looking at buying a vehicle that is in Sf but the guy has no title for it and says it came from Mississippi. My question is how do I find out if it’s stolen? I can have a bill of sale written and a statement of facts but I do not want to deal with buying the vehicle then finding out it’s stolen and I have to say give it back when I register it and then I’m at a loss. Any legit advice appreciated and thanks

Call DMV with the vin or license plate number, put it on speaker phone and go about your normal daily routine they will eventually answer after about 45-hr and they will tell you what’s up with the car

Carfax the VIN. It'll tell you if the car was ever registered in Mississippi.

if car is from out of state, its pointless to call california dmv,as they will have no record of it
u can call the state car was registered in and see if it is stolen, then try to get a title issued from that dmv
or if u know anyone that has a tow company or repair shop,u can do a lien sale on it

without the actual title from another state you wont be able to get it fully registered in CA bill of sale, statement of facts none of that will do you any good. If he doesnt have title walk away

Don't walk away if it's stolen. out the car thief. Help someone get their stolen Mustang back. You stop future Mustang thefts by outing current Mustang thieves.

I had to get the paper work started with the bill of sale. Then I had to get a bond on the car. I assume to check to see if stolen, or has a lien on it. Then had to wait about 30ish days. When it comes back clean, you will be able to get a title. Had to do it on my 77.

You can run the VIN through this website to see if it comes back stolen.
