You can only get away if you don't have a dick smog tech. Because the 49 legal midpipe is legal everywhere except can you guess where? HERE! [Roll Eyes]

Cars can pass smog without cats for cheaper than that midpipe FYI. [Wink]

hmmm

the 50 state has a CARB# but im wondering if its stamped on it and if the smog tech will even dive under the car to check, or if he will just look for 4 cats and move on...

The CARB compliant one will have a stamp on it. Technically, the smog guy should look for the stamp. Not all will, but a few might so it's a crap shoot.

If you plan to keep the car for along time, I would just get the CARB legal unit. Otherwise, swap the stock one in every 2yrs.

Why the fuck wouldn't you run a stock one, pass smog, then put the offroad on it??

When ya need, go back lol. Know how many CHP or other cops will WILLINGLY get on their knees to look?

Zero. Had a cop pull me over here for modified exhaust.. bother to look? Naw. GTFO.

I was thinking of going legal and gaining performance (however slight...i understand that)...but fuck it i guess.

Blown93snake, you must have passed the attitiude test for CHP not to peek under your car. They can peek under mine, they will see the cats. Only 2 but they are there. If they are up on their game, and i get popped for missing the reduction cats (first set of cats), its on me. Perhaps someone can point me in the direction of a shop (immediate bay area) that isnt so strict on the visual? PM’s are appreciated.

Years ago, there was a shop in daly city that didnt give a shit about visual, only if it blew clean. Well, that tech has since retired i think, and the next one hasnt acquired the torch..oh well.

If your car is lowered and the smog tech has a big belly, he's not going to look carefully under your car.

Nor will any CHP. My car is lowered.. a lot.

You think they gettin down on their knees and exposing themselves to an attack? Cops today don't care. In fact, I got pulled over 3x in 2 weeks.. 3 diff agencies lol.. none of them bothered to try lookin' under my car.

If they did, they would see a legal cat setup, anyways.

Not my point, lol..

Upon further review, I agree with all you said, and i'm more replyin to the other guy haha

I used to have an offroad pipe with the cat covers welded on. When glancing under, it looked like it had cats. [Razz]

Blown93Snake ---------- run the least timing you're allowed when passing smog. 7 degrees. Or get a chip that cuts the factory advance curves in half.

I've even heard of people grinding the pins inside the timing advance plug.. when the smog tech looks, its there.. but not doing anything except holding timing at your set base setting lol

That trick works too. If you use the dummy plug, set base timing to 13 degrees. Your headers might glow orange and burn near by objects.
