What is up mah doodz. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew if tinted tail lights were illegal. I read upon the penal code when it came to vehicles and it only states that brake lights should be visible from 500 feet. This was an online source so I don't know if it's accurate. Does anyone know for sure what the law states?

Not sure about the exact law, but my neighbor got pulled over for that and told (well, ticketed) to take off the tint by Highway Patrol. His were blacked out on his black Tahoe.

This is a "catch all" lighting section that gets used for this. There are other vehicle code sections covering tail lights but this is the go to section. Basically the lights are not maintained in proper order is how it works...
24252. (a) All lighting equipment of a required type installed on a vehicle shall at all times be maintained in good working order. Lamps shall be equipped with bulbs of the correct voltage rating corresponding to the nominal voltage at the lamp socket. (b) The voltage at any tail, stop, license plate, side marker or clearance lamp socket on a vehicle shall not be less than 85 percent of the design voltage of the bulb. Voltage tests shall be conducted with the engine operating. (c) Two or more lamp or reflector functions may be combined, provided each function subject to requirements established by the department meets such requirements. (1) No turn signal lamp may be combined optically with a stoplamp unless the stoplamp is extinguished when the turn signal is flashing. (2) No clearance lamp may be combined optically with any taillamp or identification lamp.

i did hear somewhere that as long as there are red and/ or amber showing, it is legal. The straight black out tint will get you pulled over. I pulled apart my LX taillights back in the day and spraypainted the reflector part gloss black. Put the lenses back on and they still had the required red on them, still looked kinda stock, but were tinted. it was the best thing i did. let me try to find a pic.

Thanks for all the info fellas. I'm still on the fence about this. I'll probably leave them stock so I don't attract too much attention to myself.

Nope not illegal as long as you can see the red from 500 ft away when you brake. I carry the book with me all the time so when i get pulled i ask for the code lol. I got pulled for this once and was let off as soon as i read him the code.

What does section 26104 say?

You can tint it as long as brake lights are visible from 500 feet away on a clear/sunny day, AND you have red reflectors that are not smoked (For example if the car has red reflectors on the rear bumper)..

Absolutely correct. And it's just stupid. Other drivers don't pay attention the way it is. Why add to your chances of getting in a collision..?
