Decided on a 351w for my 86, block is an a351 block. Plenty of meat to make the power I want.
I don't build motors, don't pretend to. So I don't have these pre determined specs and parts I want in the motor. Do the machine shops that assemble motors specialize in ground up stuff like this? (Meaning a customer doesn't know what rods, pistons, crank to run for desired compression and power goals). If so who can I take this motor to and they just use my budget, goals, and their skills to make it happen?

I got my motor done at Morgan's Machine & Marine in Walnut Creek. Tim who runs the place has been building engines since before you and I were born. He's an awesome guy and spent a good hour showing me around the shop and going over what my goals and budget were. He talked me out of some stuff I thought I wanted after he explained how much it would cost to do the machine work and why it took that many hours. I brought him a block and crank and he did the rest.
Here's a story about Tim. http://www.partsandpeople.com/precision-expertise-and-reputation-keep-morgan%E2%80%99s-machine-%E2%80%88marine-demand [ 2015-12-08, 06:47 PM: Message edited by: wilit ]

They should that might be the best option I've been planning the same with my current 351w getting all the parts together. what 351w block did you go with roller or non roller.
can a 351w swap be smog legal Besides a cobra r which the stock parts are expensive as hell for being stock; i dont have to worry about that with my 70; just wondering for a foxbody?

John Rankin at Rankin Performance Machine is by far one of the best I've ever seen. He normally builds $100,000 Packard, Dusenberg (sp?) and other high-end obscure motors that are irreplaceable if it's broken, so he has to do it right every time, but he's always building awesome Modular fords, SBFs, LS, SBC, big blocks, you name it.

While I don't like the possible harassment and issue of finding a smog plug, I'm not really concerned about the illegality of the swap. But to answer your question to the best of my knowledge, unless it's a complete cobra r swap (95) or maybe a completely stock swap over with all the smog and egr bs. It won't pass. Maybe a dumb smog tech won't trip if your lucky. As for my motor, it's the ford Motorsport a351 which is roller block. Svo 351 block. I WANT to do a single turbo but have no idea the cost so until I get math and numbers for that total cost I just want the block built to be boost friendly.

I'm a huge fan of Dave and Angie's work! Went to their shop and was just floored at what they work on over there. I might give them a call tomorrow

He built good ass motors. Whether or not you got played or played yourself isn't my issue. I have one of his motors still running strong. Anyways......

Dave's Machine is not in Newark anymore. I had them repair a head I have and they told me if I needed anything else done they were going to move to like Tracy I think.

Don't question it. You've been on the site long enough to know he can't ever make up his mind in anything. I like this idea over the LS though.
