I'll go first. My current daily driver, my E39 BMW. This car has completely turned me off of the BMW brand. My co-worker has a newer E39 with half as many miles as mine and he has just as many issues. Total pile of shit. I'm glad I only spent $4k on it and not $45k when it was new.

The biggest mistake i've ever made buying a car was when I traded in my 98 Cobra convertible for a top of the line Chrysler Town & Country Limited.

I know my first mistake was trading the car I bought when I was single. But the other mistake was going all out getting a limited fully loaded minivan becuase we were having our first kid.

Let me tell you, little babies don't give a shit about how leather smells over cloth. Plus these vans depreciate so fast I would have save alot of dough just buying the base model, even better to buy the base model demo car at end of year clearence.

Chrysler T&C limited vs.Chrysler T&C base
The difference $38,000 vs. $18,000

7 years later $7,000 vs $ 3,500

I never understood the whole, "we're having a kid, we need a mini van" thing. When I was born, my parents had a Triumph TR6 and an AMC Javelin. But then again, they didn't have mandatory child safety seats to worry about. After my mom replaced the TR6 with a 2nd gen Camaro, I remember playing on the floorboards as we were driving around. LOL.

Its funny you mentioned an e39. I was going to say the same thing! I had a stock 98 528i that was great for the few months I owned it, then I went out and got a slightly nodded 99 528i with ridiculous issues. It looked awesome with the M5 kit, AC wheels, etc but it was a nightmare! I'll never get an e39 again! Only bummer I'd consider are the pre-95 models.

When the car works, it's actually a really terrific car. But when it breaks, and it does that often, it's such a pain in the ass to repair. Plus parts are just stupid expensive. I could understand if they were machined steel or billet aluminum, but 99% of the time they're plastic parts. After my wife's car is paid off, I'm punting this thing and getting a new F150.

Selling my 1969 Mustang which had a 302 to my uncle for 2800 dollars , I went out and bought a 1981 Rx7 which ended up leaking oil like no one else's business. I was only 19 so I'll chalk it to being young and stupid. To this day my uncle still has the mustang out in Tucson. I didn't get another mustang till two years ago when I bought my coyote......i miss that car every day !!

my biggest mistake was buying my cobra r that you guys dont believe me about. The only reason i bought it was to be cool and i'm still not cool!! No but really 15 years ago i pulled money from my retirement to buy a very clean low mileage 1 owner 84 gt350 car that got stolen and stripped 5 days later and was found in a residential neighborhood in richmond, That fuckin hurt bad and obviously the thiefs were fuckin retarded thats the absolute worst 302 ever built!!! but they came up on the stereo system but i'm sure someone on here knows the thief though

My biggest regret was when I got my very first saleen. 88-174 white with grey stripes grey leather interior. it was a 1 of 1 I was stupid. I started traveling for my job driving acroiss country and sold it to buy a dodge dually. I still regret that getting rid of that car.

Wilit, I'm curious as to what has gone wrong on your E39? I have an E39 and with 116k on the clock, I have only experienced a small handful of problems (mileage related) with these vehicles.

Radiator, Expansion tank, Valley pan gasket & Burst hose, Thrust Arms.

To me, this car is a peice of cake to work on.

To me you shouldn't have to deal with those type of problems until really high milage.

My gramps had one with low milage. Only thing good about that car was comfortable seats and good mpg. Other than that shitty stereo, ac was busted, and same list of problems u listed all under 100k miles.

Buying a lx hatch foxbody, turn out the clutch cable or the clutch wasn't the problem. It was the bell housing from a v6 from a new edge mustang. Craigslist mechanic's special. Major headache, lots of advil and vodka. However I got bars certification. [Smile]

One owner cars usually dont have that many issues as they are maintained properly, but high mileage 3rd 4th and 5th owner cars are beat up and not maintained correctly. These have the most issues. I had a 03 M5 for a couple years, the car had one major issue after I bought it with the driveshaft. Fixed it and never had any more issues with the car. But I also did a pre purchase inspection at Bertolucci's in Roseville to let me know if there was anything going down with the car initially.

I bought three Camaros, a 99, 00 and 02, all three of them weren't worth it for me, lost money on all these things, they all had window motor and window regulator problems after I bought them, then after the guy bought my 2000 it started leaking really bad on the way home from the intake, they were all nightmares. I love BMWs only if they have a warranty, otherwise they can be a money pit, my 03 745Li was turning into a problem child but BMW bought it back real easy and gave me $5K less than what I bought it for after using it for 2.5 years and I just bought another BMW but I only keeping it until the warranty is good

I bought the car with 129k miles on it. It looked clean and well cared for. All the electrics worked except for the button that cycled through the on board computer. Seemed like a good deal. Ran strong, shifted right, no trouble codes etc. My first indication this would be a money pit was when I bought new wiper blades for it. I bought Dayco blades at O'Reily's and they were $65. That was the start of it. The rear camber is off, so it ate through a pair of tires in 20k miles. The transmission (GM 5L40E) has an issue with the valve body going bad. Mine did and required a rebuild at 142k miles ($2700). The upper radiator hose and radiator started to leak due to cracks. They had been replaced before, but had to be done again. So I did half of the system replacement with the upper hose, radiator, thermostat, rad cap ($500). Replaced both serpentine belts and tensioners ($70ea for the tensioners and $30 for both belts). The headlight adjusters broke (common problem). That was only $10 to fix, but still took time away from my life to fix it. It's now developed an oil pan leak that I will probably not fix. The power steering resevoir and hoses developed leaks ($90 to replace the res and 2 hoses). The DSC light came on a couple of weeks ago and I haven't even bothered to look at why. The sun roof tilt mechanism broke. There's two plastic sliders that make it tilt, they broke. BMW doesn't sell the plastic piece, you have to buy the entire slider mechanism ($180 per side). Now the sunroof rattles. At some point the front suspension needs to be replaced. It's developed a wobble. Pretty sure it's a thrust arm. The VANOS seals are going bad. I picked up a used one at Pick N Pull to rebuild ($150 to rebuild vs $1200 new). I'm just about to leave and grab a new fuel pump because it died yesterday ($160 at Autozone). I'm sure there's more, but at this point, I'm so pissed at it, I can't think straight.

I'm tempted to just sell this thing to a BMW breaker and lease a new Ford Fiesta for $100 a month. It would be way cheaper than trying to keep this thing on the road.

I bought a lowered F350 dually (2005). That wasn't the mistake...the 6.0 that was in it was a total POS.

And it had whopping 50k miles on it. Pushed more head gaskets than I could count. I don't wish the motor on my ex wife. And I really dislike her.

Buying the s/c for my car four years ago, and still haven't put it on. At this point the motor can't take it, and I don't have the ability/knowledge to build a motor, and I don't have the money to have it done. Feels like I pissed the money into the wind.

Since i started commuting 80-100 miles a day, I thought it would be a bright idea to finance a Nissan Sentra. God damn is this car one lifeless turd. I wish i would have bought something more fun to drive. I could have financed a nice 2005-09 Mustang GT or a nice 350z for the price i'm paying for it.

In what ways? Do you mean the fisher price interior, or what exactly? Most GM fans understand the territory you get as far as interior quality goes, but the motors are obviously what draws us in. The C6Z is very capable performance wise for the price.

Car buying mistake...hmm. I've owned 18 total (including 2 motorcylces) and I can't say any were a total mistake. I had a 1995 Z28 that was a total POS but I knew it before I bought it and only paid $1500 for it and sold it for pretty much the same amount. I had an E30 I drove for six months during which time I put over 15k miles on it literally driving the ever living life out of it every. damn. day until I finally blew a hole through the side of the block after it kept overheating (even after dealing with the cooling system). I sold it for $500 than I paid for it six months earlier, even with a blown engine.

I do regret selling my 2002 SS since it was my dream car. I wish I still had it today but I swear it was cursed. I was rear ended twice, had one incident that was my fault, a few tickets, and even cited for one reckless which was later thrown out.

I have always been a huge fan of full size k5 Blazers and have owned a few over the years..When I was 21 I found my first 77' k5 on craigslist for $650, my dad and I drove from fremont to oakley on a shitty rainy day. Got there, saw the truck, it was red with a black top and a 4" lift. I wanted it. Then the guy was starting to sound hesitant on selling it to me when he realized I was a kid..anyway I drove it home ( barely made it ) had a bad vibration at 50 mph, brakes locked up easily, tranny started slipping (th350) then realized the body was full of cancer in more places than usual, the 4wd didn't work and it kept snapping u-joints over 50 mph, but it did pass smog with a tune up and seafoam lol..So I ended up selling it to my sisters bf, then he sold it about a month later..Happy ending though because we both made our money back haha.

My 2005 GT. Car was great but interest rate through the finance company provided by the dealer f**ked me for 6 years. Plus the psycho EX had the car and then bad joojoo from there. Sold the curse. However the car wasn't a lemon it was just the high amounts of interest I paid and the chick and the time. I see it as the biggest mistake I made in my life at that time. Oh well you live and learn.

My 2003 Cobra was bad too. The car wasn't maintained and treated well from the previous owner and as I had the car I discovered little things were broken and missing that wasn't cisible on the surface (behind dash ect) however the 03/04 cobra is still the best car ever made IMO. I wish mine was in better shape when I had it but I sold that too.

my biggest regret was rushing to buy my first fox mustang. 91 GT for 3500, the guy busted the shocks at a pot hole on his way to my house, the car was so low i thought i needed new springs well it was the shocks. then 3 days after buying i found out i had a broken frame the whole time. i was 19 was my grandma gift to me for graduating high school and i got fucked over, i would beat that dude ass if i saw him today. now i know i tell my cousins not to buy a 5.0 in the Bay without really checking it out.

Buying a used viper with 6K "freeway miles on it". It turned out it had 6K miles of extensive track time on it (previous owner must of stored the stock wheels/tires away while road racing the car). Water pump blew and noticeable knock in motor came up after 2 months of owning the car (bitch to get it back to S.Cal to get my money back).

Buying a 911 for the wife and letting her think it is "her car". Now it really is "HER CAR" and I can barely get to drive it unless I am getting her gas (which takes at least a hour btw [Wink] ).

I'm sure the owner didn't want to give your money back. How long (and money in legal fees) did it take to get this straight?

Let's see:

1. Key fob transponder died at 24k miles ($800 dealer fix)
2. Valve drop issue on LS7 motor. (I had to coin up out of my pocket to fix an obvious chevy mistake)
3. Creaks and rattles all over the place
4. Interior is pure econobox. I felt like I was driving my beater car.
5. Even after H/C/I & longtubes, I felt that the car was slow. It only made 560rwhp. (I may be spoiled by my previous 680whp Viper)
6. Clutch was very tempermental. It made my aggressive driving experience very poor.
7. The seats were straight shit. I have never driven a sports car with such horrible seats.

From doing extensive research on these vehicles, the 4.0/4.4 V8 for example.. The coolant system runs under higher pressure than basically any other vehicle cooling system on the road. Not only that, do they run at a higher pressure the entire cooling system is plastic. The burst hose behind the intake manifold, the water pump outlet (thermostat housing), the entire top of the radiator, the expansion tank. This was a mistake on BMW's part.

The VANOS units do start leaking, that's another normality.

The rear camber, when an BMW is aligned (like many other euro's) they need to be weighted down in the back & drivers seat. If they do not weigh it down, they will align it to spec's and it will cause extensive negative camber (your problem). Taking it to a competent shop will yield benefits in this scenario.

My oil pan developed a small sweat at some point from 100k - 120k and I went down there and added 5-10 In/lbs of torque to the bolts, this seemed to stop it. For the price of the car, it isn't worth doing this work.

I will tell you this much, as much shit is wrong with it. It won't leave you stranded. This is my second 4.0/4.4 and my first had well over 200k on it and still ran/leaked like a champ.

In conclusion, I agree with all your statements.

Buying a 911 for the wife and letting her think it is "her car". Now it really is "HER CAR" and I can barely get to drive it unless I am getting her gas (which takes at least a hour btw [Wink] ).

Plus it was a Dodge, that was the real problem [Wink]
I'm sure the owner didn't want to give your money back. How long (and money in legal fees) did it take to get this straight?

Luckily it did not cost me...other than having to tow it down to SD and threatening to park it on their front lawn (privately owned dealership) and putting up "lemon signs"... They agreed to take it back at the purchase price.
