3 ˝ years ago my back was messed up from an accident which made me think that my days of wrenching was over and it was time to hang it up. Well April this year I got my second wind when Casey sent me an e-mail saying that my name was going to be on a feature article in June issues MM&FF. I’ve had a few cars that have made it on MM&FF but this was the first time my name was actually given credit for the work that was done.
Originally the plan was to do a ’93 Cobra clone with a Termi swap. How cool would that be to have done a Mach 1 rendition in a notchback and to do a ’93 Terminator? Been there, done that, should be a quick swap. Done in 3 months tops. Well looking for available 1993 Mustang GTs or LX proved to be very difficult, at least something worthy of a transplant. After being stranded by my wife in the middle of Stockton with $3500 cash in my pocket, I got to do some real soul searching. Craigslist had a couple 4 banger coupes for sale and thought I’d give it a try again and open up to do another notch. A couple days later I picked up my Notch, paid the back fee and started disassembling the car. I also started searching for a terminator.
May 2014- Picked up my 1990 4 banger notch
June 2014- I thought with the introductory of the GT500 and the 420hp GTs that the price of the terminators would simmer down from what they were 4 years ago. Boy was I wrong. It really didn’t make any sense. 2 months had gone by and countless times being out bid at the last minute. I even sold my Birel Racing shifter kart to free up more money so I could bid with the big dogs. Then a talk with Lee (racerX), steered me in a direction that I was on the fence before about, but he convinced me that the money is in a coyote swap. I think he meant ”my money is going into” a coyote swap. Plus reading up on Jason Hall’s FoxGT500, I felt I have enough information to commit to a Jason Hall type Coyote swap, but mine will be CA smog legal.
July 2014- My bid for a 2013 Mustang GT won and was delivered. The car initially ran like crap. The car was hit in the rear, so not sure why it was running as rough as it did. After a week of trouble shooting, I finally decided to get a hand held tuner mainly do read codes. While waiting on delivery of the tuner I thought I should start labeling all the wire harnesses. This is were I found a wire connector with no home. Oh looky here, there's a sensor missing. Went to the local Ford dealership and picked up a sensor. Installed it and the harness and vaaaaarrrrrroooommm! Took a trip around the sub-division. Everything checked out fine. Now I'm confident that everything truely is working fine and the engine and driveline works as it should. The next day my tuner came in. It still in the box it came in. Haven't opened it yet.
August 2014- started removing the interior and engine/tranny/driveline. Wow didn't realize how huge the elecric assist steering rack was. My plan was to incorporate it into the Sn95 K-memeber.
September 2014- Trying to make this steering rack fit is much like trying fit a cube into a round hole. Lets just say I test fitted the k-member 4 times before it was perfect.
This is a picture after my 2nd test fit.
In this picture you'll see that I've modified the oil pan for clearance and what you don't see is that I've also bent the oil pick up tube to allow for that clearance.
As of now I will put the actual dates of my progress.
9/23/2014- Started clearing out the engine compartment so I have better access to the firewall and will allow me to see better what I'm up against as far as how much of the firewall need to be transplanted and where to make my cuts to keep things dimesionally correct.

Nice! Seems like quite an undertaking but by the sounds of your other projects I'm guessing it will be a top notch job when its done (no pun intended, HA!).
I have to ask, what do you mean exactly by "left stranded by the wife in Stockton with $3500?" Haha.

It was a school night and this dude in Stockton finally replied to my offer to show me his car. The price was fine and the car looked clean. So my wife had just enough time to take me there and head back to pick up the kids. We waited at the guys house and the car drove up. Sound nice and looked just like the pictures. So I told my wife it's good. So she left. After looking over the "clean title" car, I found issues that would say it should be something other than "clean title". I believe the guy honestly didn't know. Any how, he had to leave for work so he dropped me off at the truck stop on 99. That Burger King don't belive in air conditioning. It was hot in there. Just glad they didn't charge for refills. So after picking up the kids at 2:30pm and then dropping them off at her cousin's house, (she probably rambling about why I waste time and money working on old cars, maybe she should leave me there to teach me a lesson) she heads back through 680 and 580 in that afternoon traffic. Picked my ass up around 5:00pm. I'm glad I don't have to ccommute through that everyday.

When you talked about your coyote project I imaged it would already be bad ass considering you built a cool mach1 foxbody.

Lee, I'm not like that. I've been thinking of doing this swap maybe in a year or 2. You just made my mind up earlier.
I did buy a upr k member. But by the time I got it, I was done with this one. My concern is on how much I had to cut away on the stock K member. There would not be much left of the tubular k member. I'd have to make a jig and make my cuts and welds in it to keep everything dimensionally correct. At work I just can't leave a piece like that out. There are people who would have a shit fit know I was working on a personal project. But the work on the stock K member has me better prepared to make the necessary modifications.
So far, I'm leaning towards Got to have it Green. But grabber blue, Oxford white, and Safety green is in the mix. Rims will be semi gloss 18" RTRs, Red Brembo up front, 95 cobra R/heat extractor hood 03-04 cobra IRS, and ABS/traction control. Wipers will be deleted.

9/24/2014- Well today I've exposed more of the firewall, and started to cut some of the spot welds on the frame rails, but find myself having to be careful around the fuel and brake lines. Been hesitant to remove these, because it almost mean that the rear end will need to be dropped and space is at a premium. I guess I just gotta do, what I gotta do.
Photos will be back, just need to reduce the size

Why the firewall swap? Is it worth it? If so I'd like to know your source. I want to do the same swap, but without assisted steering. Seems like to much weight being added back to the fox. My goal is to find out if someone has made a plug n play harness for the dash.
Posted by RRRCobraSC281 (Member # 7086) on
:
Newer style seats require the transfer of the seat cross supports.
Newer tranny and console require the transfer of the trans tunnel.
Newer ac/heater unit have inlet and outlets in different location. Drive by wire has different mount locations.
Newer steering columns have bearing hubs at the firewall to minimize steering shaft wobble.
Bottom line is that it's really up to the builder how far you want to go with your build. I don't plan on doing another one of these builds ever again. This is why I choose to do a complete swap. I know everything worked before I started disassembling the car. And when comes together I should expect the same.
There are many coyote swapped fox bodies out there. Some successful, some not. Jason Hall built a modular fox using the previous generation GT500. 2007-10... not really sure. Those cars didn't have the electric assist steering rack. He went tubular k member and I believe long tube headers.
As far as where I get my sources, I have to say Jason Hall was the only build thread that I've seen that was somewhat helpfull but still missing a lot of detail. I know it can be done and at the end what I want it to look like.

I think he is using the original wiring because he did mention that he had to label every single plug he took off. I'm thinking it's a plug n play deal with this one

Seems like forever since I last worked on the project. For the past month and a half I've been doing some crazy hours at work. We're talking 11-14 hour day 6-7 days a week, plus trying to work on this project. Yes, I'm still married. Well last Monday it started to wear on me and by Wednesday I caught the flu bug that damn near put me out. Past few days I've been sleeping in. Man that felt good. Caught my second wind and worked on the project again.
Started to cut out important paneling that I'm planning to transfer to the FOX, and removed the roof since it and the floor were the only straight pieces on the car. Then I get a call from a buddy and need the rockers to use as a jig to manufacture some side pipes. So then I decided to start chopping in manageable sizes and loaded it up in my mobile storage.
I'm halfway done removing the passenger side frame rail. This is were I'm at for now. Once the frame rails are removed then it cutting the firewall and then the floors all to come out as one piece.

I bought 4 packs of 5 and have gone through 2 of them. The part that ate up most of the blades was when I tried to slice off the entire S197 frame rails in 1 piece. Once the blade is bowed or you put a bend on the blade while cutting it will heat up the blade to the point it will lose its sharpness.

Anyone can buy a new car. But doing it this way, I practically getting a new car. I get to choose the exact color I want, the rims and tire combo, the suspension, and it will be 1 of "a very few" limited edition.
The bonus is that I learn a few things along the way and make some new friends in the process.

Well I got the IRS in as much as I could. Realized that I was missing the lower shock bolts and they are long. Found some bolts at the local Pick-n-Pull only to find out they are about 10mm too short.
This weekend got the engine in the Fox Body for the first time. It sure looks like it belongs in there. Getting more and more of the garage back. Trimmed the S197 floor and it is also in sort of. I will have to cut the flange off the passenger side exhaust manifold and weld the catted down pipe. The flange is hitting the firewall. The driver side looks fine. Right now I've cut off a big chunk of the cowl panel. I know I will be needing some of that space. It's just easier to remove the big piece first and then once everything is in then see how much of it will be welded back in.

Well I got the floor sort of in. Drilled a a couple holes and bolted the floor to the sub frames. The floor looks like it needs to come down about an 1" because the top of the dash is sitting too high and won't come close to the mounting brackets on the trans tunnel. Going to have to cut the sub frames out and trim them down and reweld them back in once floor position is finalized. Here's what it looks like.

I appreciate your comments. This is my first official build thread. I really didn't do one when I did the modular Mach Notch. But that was because there was plenty of good build threads out there to source information to do that type of swap. Unfortunately a coyote swap is still fairly new and I haven't found a build thread that was usefully with exception to Jason Hall's Fox500. But there are alot of in-between info that is missing and hoping that I'll be able to provide a more detailed report on how(at least for me) to do a coyote swap that will pass CA smog.

Do you think the engine noise tube thingy will be needed if the cab is not as sound tight as the new GTs . just wondering, great update so far..

Right now just not leave any stones unturned. I'm leaning towards not using it just to not clutter the engine bay with unnecessary stuff. I'm planning to install some electricity c controls l cutouts for the exhaust. More than enough exhaust sound to get my fix in.

So far I've completed the sheet metal around the brake booster. Rewelded some more pieces on the driver strut tower to make clearance for the master cylinder. Since I'm keeping the wipers functioning I have no real clean place to put a remote brake fluid reservior. So the best thing to do is to make room for the booster and MC like factory.
Also welded back the cowl panel and welded in part of the S197 cowl where the pedal assembly bolts to. Also test fit the AC/heater unit and made some modifications to the cowl also.

Also started trimming the dash.
Have to trim the dash brackets and eventually reweld them closer to the a-post.
The dash may look a little high but it's the VIN plate that's holding it up about 3/4" higher than where its gonna be.

Someone asked me I should do a Mod swap to sell and make a living. Hell No! Once I'm done with this, I'm done. I mean it nice to do new things and learn from it, but this project has taken me 5 months so far and it's definitely not something I'd do to put food on the table. It's a hobbie/habit. Fun to do once because it challenges the mind, but once it's done, it's just work...
If there is anything you see that you want more detail on, let me know. I'm posting relevant pics for the most part.

today I started to prep the brackets for the dash mount on the A-post. Here's some pics of how i'm doing mine.
First I used a hole saw to cut 1" holes with 60mm centers. This was done so that I could lay the dash mount nuts from the S197 right on top and weld in position.
Here's a pic of the dash mount nuts that were transferred from the S197 to the foxbody.
Here's what it looks like all welded up. I also welded some 8mm flange nuts on the bottom. I like them better than those nut clips. I also drilled out the hole for the locating pin.
And here's a pic of the brackets that were cut off the dash earlier bolted in were they should be. The locating pin was cut shorter, so that only 1/2" was sticking out. Next is to put the dash in and get it leveled. Then weld the brackets to the dash. Making the dash officially modified for the foxbody.
Same was done on the driver side.

This morning I started working on modifiying the fenders to 91-93 spec. I know that its probably not worth the trouble to do this, but I just don't want any issues with tire rubbing. Believe me I've tried my best to find 91-93 fenders. The ones I find are in worst shape than the ones that came on the car.
I also took the Mach 1 seat bottom and the S197 Seat bottom to King Kovers in Hayward. They are going to make a new cover matching the look of the S197 to the frame work and foam of the SN95 seat bottom. Can't wait to see how they turn out.
Here's a pic before I drilled the new holes from my template.

It's the little things your documenting that make this project a great one. Anyone can dump new fenders on but to know how to modify them or just leant the craft is better! Keep it up man! Great work. Also where did you learn to weld? Looking to learn soon

Working at NUMMI on 3rd shift I worked along a friend who by trade was a welder. I showed me some pointers. I got moved the 2nd shift and eventually was designated the emergency repair welder on most of the major equiptment, since not too many people had the nads to actually rush and weld shit together and call it fixed.
Now that was almost 5-13 years ago. Now my biggest problem is being able to see. I admit that my vision isn't as sharp as it used to be.
Finished some loose ends on front floors.

Well this weekend I've decided to smooth out the fender antenna hole and mount the antenna at the rear like the coyote Mustangs. This is more for simplifying the wiring of the antenna since theirs are located in the passenger rear.
Also got my rear seat bottoms from King Kovers. Here is a pic of what I intended to do with them. But issues with the the gap between seat back and bottom plus how rigid the seat frame was that for it to be flush with the quarter trim I would have to trim part of the wheel well and....basically a lot of work for maybe not much gain. I have a couple options though.
I'm planning on having King Kovers to make a new seat cover for the seat back on either the Mach 1 (SN95) seat or the Fox Seat back.
The fox seat would be pretty straight forward. Just cover the seat like they did for the bottom.
For the Mach 1 seat it's a bit more involved because its 2 halves and the latching device for the fold down part, plus the extend it out about 2" on each side and square off the top corners more.
I think this is gonna be my first poll question for this forum. Which should I do the fox seat back or the split seat SN95?

You guys are killing me. I was hoping to use the Mach 1 seats and have them recovered like the seat bottoms, But you guys are right. It would be worth it to get them S197 seat backs in there. The head rest would be a dead give a way that there is more to the Coupe than meets the eye.
Spent most of my day trying to figure out how I'm going to mount the rear seat backs. Started trimming some of the S197 rear deck that I saved and got it about where I want it. While taking a break I decided to shave the front antenna and install the S197 antenna.
For those who plan to do this, dont do what I did. Make the hole about 5/16" further back. There is a support layer that will prevent the antenna plate to sit flush which will require some trimming and more work.
Will have to cut a new slot in the aluminum antenna plate so you can rotate the actual antenna 180 degrees around. This is for clearance issues with internal supports in that area of the quarter panels.

I'm hopeing to get a years worth of car shows under my belt. Then I don't know...still too early to say. I know for sure I'm gonna insure it with full coverage at appraised value before it goes on the road. Not going to repeat what happened to the Mach Notch.

today I've mocked up the rear seats 1 more time to get measurements for the brackets I'll need to make to mount the seat backs in the final position. There are gaps at the sides that will need to be extended out a bit and the lower seat will need to be recovered so the white stripe lines up with the seat back. At that point they will add extra material and padding between the seat bottom and seat back. Trimmed the rear quarter so it sits where it should.
Started to transfer the s197 door locks to the fox doors. I'm doing this to simplify the wiring, but also to have the PATS to work correctly and the dome light feature to work as it should.
First it's best to remove all the inner components.
Next to drill or grind out the counter sunk holes. This is to allow the inner reinforcement sheet to be flush with the outer sheet.
Next from the door section from the S197 you want to split the 2 sheets. There is some adhesive so use a blade to help do this. don't want to bend up this piece. Also when cutting this piece from the S197 you want to make sure it's big enough to hover the 3 original holes.
Center the slot to the old door latch and clamp it into position.

Weld the inner sheet though the original bolt holes.
Now trim the outer sheet enough so that you can use the holes to line up with the inner sheet and trace over the door outer so to identify the part that needs to be cut out.
Now cut the outer sheet without cutting the inner sheet. Once done I added a good size tack weld on the forward edge corners and in the middle, then trim the new outer piece so it's got a slight gap all the way around and then start welding it together.
And this is what it looks like for now.

Gonna pick up some paint this coming Friday. Just a little preview of the color I'm getting.

Started to work on the driver side door lock. I think on the SN95 i just used the key lock and transferred it to the fox. The S197 has a bit different key lock so just adjusting the tumbler wasn't gonna do it. So went to the Ford dealership and found that only the Econo Van is the only one with a similiar key lock as the Foxbody. So $90 for the new key lock and about 30 minutes putting the thing together and now I have a key lock that will work with the S197 key.
If it wasn't going to work, plan B would be to just shave the driver side key hole like I did for the passenger side and the trunk.

Earlier I made the lower radiator support. Here's what it looks like. Kinda industrial looking but functional for now.
Also mounted the smog canister.
And started bonding the chopped up fresh air intake for the HVAP. My first go at fiberglass. Turned out better than expected.
Since the S197 HVAP grabbed fresh air through the firewall I had to reconfigure it to grab air from the cowl panel. So I was careful not to mess with the mounting holes, I separated the intake so I could rotate it 90 degrees. Then with the HVAP in position and positioned the opening where I wanted it, I used aluminum duct tape to hold things sort of in position and used Evercoat Kitty hair to bond the 2 parts where they were the closest together. Once the Kitty Hair cured, then the part could be handle. Then with Duct tape on the outside to shape the interior, I used fiberglass to form and seal the interior of the intake and then use more kitty hair to bond the exterior in placed with a lot of texture and crevices. Then use some 1" foam weather sealer from Ace Hardware and this part will be done.

Thought about being creative on where to mount the computer. Some have mounted it through the apron, but it just seemed like I was fighting the harness doing this. So I've decided to keep it as natural as I can.
I had to cut this section out to keep the CPU and fuse box from hitting the hood.

There was a possibility of getting back my Mach Notch hood back. There was going to be a possibility of a trade for my uncut virgin cobra R hood for the already trimmed cobra R hood for shacker, but it didn't happen. Plus the super bowl kind of took up a day....
Yeah, these are lame excuses. But honestly, mocking up locations for the various components from a car that built on a totally different platform takes extra time. If this was a Termi swap it would have been done in 2 months. I still have to locate the ABS pump and make passages through the frame rails for the fuel lines and brake lines. Then I got a volunteer to come over to fill and sand the engine compartment. At this point then it's ready for paint.
Believe me, I'm anxious to have color on it too. I hate it when my wife refers my project as a "junk car".
Posted by RRRCobraSC281 (Member # 7086) on

Well the car is not at paint yet.... Almost....
Did finish mounting the ABS Pump and also the ECU. Brack lines between the MC and ABS have been bent to work. Hopefully not going to be too crazy reinstalling this once from paint. Also finished fab work for the interior door levers.
Here is a little bit of how I did it.
The cable to the door lever was the limiting factor as to the location of the door lever.
Then I fabricated a bracket and welded a flange nut on the back side.
Here is what it looks like with the door lever attached.
Here is a quick pic of a test fit with a junk door panel. The door lever could be straighten to match the character line and tighten.
Here is the new style striker. I just drilled 2 new holes and then used the same nut bracket that was used on the S197 and welded it to the inner sheet. I over sized the hole to allow for some adjustment.
Here is all that is left to do before the car goes to paint:
1. Remove the Hood hinge cups and wire wheel the sealer off.
2. Cut out hole on driver fender through Scott Rod panel for washer bottle. (I tried to make the S197 bottle work, but sometimes it just not worth the added effort when the stock washer bottle and location works.)
3. Fill and Sand engine compartment.
4. Mount the Cobra R hood and modify hood for Shaker system.
5. Water proof all joints with sealer.
Then it's ready for paint. Weather is kinda sucking at the moment, but still got more to do.

Patients grasshopper. Actually this past weekend, went to Lake Tahoe with the family. Kinda in a holding pattern, since the painter isn't quite ready for it yet. I still need to modify the hood for the shaker and finish sanding the engine bay. This is what I'm planning on doing today.

After cutting the hole in the hood and started looking at the CDC Shaker kit, I realized that I'm using the fox/SN95 washer fluid bottle and will not be able to use the stock air box. Will have to go with a conical filter and a smog approved intake pipe.
I was on the fence on it anyways. And after seeing pics of the shaker on coyote engine bay you really don't see much of what identifies a coyote engine. So a friend dropped his hood to have done the same way for his Mach swap notch. Looks like everything is going to work out.
Engine bay is almost done sanding. Just a few spots left. Friday I'll be heading to the painters to have them pick up my car.

Waiting on a painter to pick up the car. Been ready since Wednesday. Going to have 90GTSleeper paint the car.
The original guy that I was going to paint the car got an unexpected delivery of trucks to repair and paint so he's booked.
Was going to give BMC of San Leandro a call if 90GTSleeper don't follow through. They actually have their shit together and do really nice work. Painted the new bumper on my 300c.
Made some last minute changes.
After putting the front suspension on and the wheel, I wanted to see how much clearance I had at full compression of the springs and the steering wheel turned to the left all the way. Well before I got to about 1 1/2" to the fender lip it hit the inner apron that I extended. I was gonna leave it, and put a shim on the steering rack to limit the amount that I could turn to the left Then I thought about turning left into an incline and the wheel rubbing will drive me nuts, so I placed the brake booster back in to see how much clearance I had and decided that it would be best to make clearance for the wheel and will used some Gorilla tape to keep road grime from going into the engine compartment and remove it during shows. With the brake booster in, wheel turned all the way to the left and springs fully compressed to where it touches the fender lip, it barely touches the brake booster.

It's been awhile since that last update, and not much has been relayed to me as far as progress until today. Finally got first coat of primer in the engine bay. And the ETA was said by the painter "March 30th +/- a couple days". Only time will tell.
I thought I was getting the car last weekend, but that obviously isn't happening. And with the final date somewhat revised and sort of set in stone, I've decided to work on the little things like refirbishing the side view mirrors and the rear tail light housing for a spare set. Probably freshen up the quarter windows while i'm at it.
Here's the products I'm using.
After giving them a scrub down, and 1 set was almost thrown away it was so hidious. But with some 80 grit and a lot of time, I was able to sand the ugly out of it.
1st coat of primer
Now after their 1st wet sand, they are ready for a final coat of primer

I can sympathize with him in a way. Because to keep doing it at a high level day in and day out, your body will shut down. I know I did. Once the car was off to paint I was going to work on the 93 Mustang and rebuild the tranny... Well I really didn't do shit for an entire week.
The other guy was going to have it done in a week but that's working on it everyday and with 2 people. He said 2 week was doable, but there was some details that needed taken care of and that may have slowed things down, but I estimated 3 weeks, but now were are aproaching 4 and we now have primer in the engine compartment.
With painter's, it's gonna take as long as it's gonna take. Just how it is.

How viscous the primer will influence the nozzle size of the gun you will be using. Probably going to use a 2 part primer. Put it through the gun and adjust with reducers and nozzle settings. Try it on a practice piece and see how it flows. I've painted small parts for 6 years and used a detail gun, but also used quart gun for doing Saleen ground effects back in the days.

All I got to say is, if it comes out as good as Casey's car, then it's worth the wait.
Plus I'm filling in my time working on my new POS. Finished up shortening the SN95 rear end to Fox width. Doing a 5 lug conversion.
Painter should be done next weekend based on what he's telling me. But bottom line I'm not going to make the Knott's.

This is why i'm so hesitant on having someone paint/work on my cars. It seems like i hear so many horror stories about painters/mechanics. Especially the low budget cheap ones who throw out these too good to be true rates and quotes.

Can't really blame people for being impatient. Some progress pics will keep this interesting. I've already gotten a couple people wanting references to your paint services. I'm holding off on giving any references until I see the finish product for myself. Just deliver as promised and this will benefit everyone.

If this painter turned his excuses into work ethnic you would be all right. Its funny to me hes month's behind and many missed deadlines and he says on here that its a frame off mustang job, like he didn't know that before he made the deadlines.
Posted by Robb (Member # 9444) on

If he can't even meet a deadline HE made with something as simple as snapping some pictures of the progress and posting them, I doubt the job is going to get done.
We just be haterZ hatin.
Posted by Stang66 (Member # 10504) on

The problem is something that happens much too often in this business. they accept way too many jobs and don't plan accordingly with deadlines given. Sucks for the customer when they got personal agendas on how the build of the car will progress.

You do realize that the painter has had the car since February and so far, all that is posted are a couple jams and the underside of the hood painted? It doesnt take 5 months to paint a damn car. That and the fact we are now almost 3 months past the ETA the PAINTER gave. I would be pissed off to the max if i was in op's shoes since we are now in the prime months of the car show season and OP's car is primered and in 100 pieces at a paint shop still.

whats the painters excuse for the all the delays? was the painter given a loose expectation on when the car would be completed? whats the deal w/ the painter? seems like this has been dragged on for more than it should have and the customer is being extremely patient to say the least.
whats up w/ painters and not delivering as promised? seen more than a couple painters specifically on this board that suck when it comes to delivering.

I agree. I can understand set backs but, over and over gets old. I know for a fact this isn't this painters first time. I realize he does good work but come on. Get the shit done in a timely manner.

This guy reminds me of Dan and his excuses. To OP don't be too nice now or you'll end up getting burned like we did with Dan and his excuses. Great engine builder with better excuses, fuck dan. With that being said I'll never do business with this painter.

does this dude paint out of his own shop or is it done on the side/amateurish? the car looks well put together and it would be a shame if the body/painter selection was done w/ budget in mind while the rest of the car looks to be done w/ no expense spared.
hopefully the owner did pay a dime yet...man this sucks to be held up by something that shouldnt take this long.

Maybe not this week, but I'm pretty confident the car will be done. And that's really all that is important.

Sad but true. It will be done in a month....at least the paint part. Person who painted my Factory 5 Racing Cobra replica is finishing it up. Actually sanding it all down and redoing everything.

Great. So your hoping to have your car back late August? You still going with same color?
Posted by RRRCobraSC281 (Member # 7086) on
:
Still going with the same color. A very reputable shop. He usually does high end collector cars. So a fox body mustang is usually not the usual customer here, but he's making an exception.
Normally his charge is $10,000 but after showing him all the shit I've gone through he's promised me $5600 by the end of August. Which usually mean mid September, because I've dealt with the guy before and he is the best painter I know west of the Rockies.

Yes, the guy is going to reblock sand the car. Lots of areas where he painted over debris and adhesive from labels. The only good part he said was the jams were done. The $5600 price is a friendly price. He knows what I went through.

I still believe Jon does know how to paint, but his health issues kinda complicates correcting his mistakes along the way. And at what point does he finally throws in the towel or tap out? I know he needed the money but with his health deteriorating, he really shouldn't be taking on such projects until he truly is physically able to do it from start to finish without compromise.
But for now, it would be best for him to get his health in order. Truely that should be what's important for him and his family.

He's in financial hardship. Sure I could take him to civil court and win. It would probably lead into bigger problems for him. Is it going to make me feel better? Probably not.
Building a case isn't gonna happen by itself. And the fact that I got my car back and it's being painted by someone I truly trust, I'm already 10x happier and relieved than I was at this time last week. So do I want to go back and gather all that crap for $2600 and to ruine someone's life? Some might enjoy that, but that's not me.
I'm past this whole ordeal, and I'm not looking back. I got a car to put together. That's my focus.

One thing about UPR, they really try to get it right. And I bought the K member back in January.
I will post pics once everything is together. ~end of October. The rewiring, running the fuel/brake lines, and the plumbing for the smog/vapor canister is what will take some time. Probably by the end of year for first start.

If the wheels are the same weight I'd run 1 set on the passenger side and one set on the drivers side, you can't ever see both sides of the car at the same time without a mirror. By the way I love how you have the hood hinges and cups black, it's subtle attention to detail like those that make an engine bay look great.

Wow! Awesome workmanship!
As for wheels, I'd choose A if those were the only two options...but as much time and effort you're putting into that car, it deserves WAY better wheels! Why not some real BBS, CCW, or TF wheels?

Lack of funds. If the car is good enough to make it in a mustang magazine then I might get a loan for a nice set of rims.

I have a set of CCW Classics in 5x114 but they are in Supra/SC offset. Slim chance it would fit your rear especially since they're 18x11 with 295s or you could have my set for almost half of what I paid for wheels & tires

Well what I'm doing right now isn't all that exciting to post. Done modified the tank and the vapor lines associated with the fuel tank and filler neck. So tank is installed. Straightened out all the 2013 brake lines so to make it easy to bend them where I need them bent for the Foxbody. So the ABS module and all the brake lines are done except for the one that goes to the passenger front brakes.
This weekend I hope to have the brake lines done and the rearend installed so I can do final measurements and get the drive shaft built.
Fuel and vapor lines from the engine will be done next week probably, along with the battery relocation to the trunk. Then it's back to trimming wires for the back half.

I usually like It quiet, but when I do listen to anything, it's KNBR 680 sports talk radio.
But personally, I feel like I've been slacking a bit. Long hours at work and cold weather makes it hard to wake up early to get a good start.

Was gonna wait until my Optima battery charger came in so I can take pics with the LED lights on. Yes, the Optima battery I pulled from storage is in need of a charge and some maintenance, and all bulbs have been switched to LEDs. Reason switching to LEDs, because the 2013 headlights and taillights were LED. And since I'm using the wire harnesses from a 2013 the wire size was based on LED amperage loads. The incandescent bulbs would have drawn too much current.
The taillight wiring was a little tricky since the turn signal and brake lights light up the same group of LEDs, and the Foxbody is not like that. There's a module in the back that controls the type of light sequence, and it gets an input from the brake pedal position switch (BPP). I plan to detach the BPP from the module and use it only for the brake lights and 3rd brake light. Then wire the turn signal to the inner turn/stop light wire. The inner because on the 2013 the turn signals were sequential and electronically fired. So to keep the same flash cycle I'm using the inner turn/stop light. And since I've disconnected the BPP input to the module. The turn/stop light will only fire as a turn signal, and never for brakes.
Hope I didn't lose anyone on that explanation.
Things left to do:
-Waiting on the driveshaft. Been ordered about 2 weeks ago. Any moment.
-Top off fluids. i.e. Brake fluids, super unleaded gasoline, and antifreeze.
-Charge the AC system
-Retorque all suspension bolts
-Install the H-pipe and cat-backs.
-Paint the interior quarter trim.
-Modify foxbody door panels.
-Install the front and rear glass.
-Get ready for Knotts.

Well, I've been working on the window motors off and on for a week now and it seems that there's a motor rotation sensor on the cuircut board inside the power motor housing. I'm now in search of the passenger side power window motor because I need the motor attached to the housing. The way I'm going to wire it is going to be like the one on the left.
Also working on putting steering rack limiters. This can work for power steering racks as well. These flaming river steering racks are aftermarket and allow the wheels to turn further than stock which is a problem. Made these spacers out of 1" pvc pipe. My proto type was on the larger side (7). I made 6 more in varying smaller sizes.

Yes after I get the doors lined up better. Want to wait until I get sub frames welded in and the car on its wheels. Then make sure that all the doors are lined up, then install the side trim. It will probably be one of last the last things I do.

Solved the dome light mystery. It seems that the 1 ground I didn't attach on the driver see was the culprit. Once it was securely fastened the dome light worked as it should.
Worked on the power mirrors today. Almost straight forward. But of course nothing it easy with this build. The up/down worked as it should, but the left/right was backwards. I needed to reverse the wiring to the 1 motor. But of course, wires were not used here.
Sorry about getting ahead of myself and not taking a true before pic.
Here is what it looks like after I rearranged the power grid for the left/right motor.
Here what it looks like with the everything wired up on the driver side, minus the door speaker.

Last few weeks been trying to find reasons why the car won't turn over, and found that the PCM relay coil isn't coming on. I suspect it's a PATS issue. Went to the local Ford service department and they have told me that it is very likely that it will need to be retrained, since the battery was disconnected for over a year. Taking the car to have them reprogram PATS this coming Monday. Hopefully that's it and I'll be able to finish up the exhaust and take it to BAR ref and get it certified California smog compliant.

PATS has been re-taught. 2nd key made. Car sounds tough. AC system charged.
Making transition pieces for the S197 H-pipe to SN95 cat-backs. Did note that there is a very small leak on the AC low pressure hard line were it was shortened and welded back together.
Will take care of it when I have my buddy weld the full length sub frames.
Gonna investigate why the park light lights up when I use the turn signals. It's not noticeable when the park/head lights are on. But that kinda stuff bugs me.
And next week Thursday I'll have a temporary permit so I can present the car to the BAR referee. So far no check engine light.
After driving it around the dealership and loading it on and off the trailer, I'm rethinking the manual steering rack. It sucks not having power steering.

Trust me when I tell you this. Don't take the path that I have taken. It's dangerous out here. I don't want to see you to get hurt son.
Obviously haven't seen any of my builds. That's right I don't hardly post them here for notoriety hugs. It wasn't a negative comment if you would have half read, it had sarcasm attached yes but definitely giving props to how much of a pain it is to center a floor pan to the rest of the car that it wasn't even built for. I do understand how long it takes. But I think it was misunderstood because I rarely show my work on a this public forum.
Get on with your bad self. Squishy squishy

When it gets done DONE, I'll post finish product pics. I just texted pics to people who were on my contacts list that I personally met AND have shown genuine interest in my build.
But for the most part I've posted what it takes to do this type of swap and that was my intent. Not as someone put it, "for notoriety hugs"

I estimate that probably by summer that I'll have the funds to pay for the interior to be touched up, appraisal done so I can insure it for full value, and the power steering added to make it much more enjoyable to drive.

Actually my intent almost 2 years ago was to do a termi on a 93 Cobra/GT and make it a 93 termi Cobra. But finding a 93 GT that wasn't beat to shit was harder than finding a notch at the time.

Just got back from the Referee. Pass on everything except the stock intake was hit for not having the stock rubber boot. So just need to find a stock intake pipe and see if i can somehow cram it in there.

Got the car back from the interior shop. Still need to work on the rear inner quarter trim and the side moldings.

Well, a few weeks ago, the BAR referees failed me because I cut clearances in the Catalytic converter housings and the cut lower section of the air box. So I ordered another set of cats and a new air box. Finished removing the ABS module to make room for the complete stock air box. Because I wasn't using the EPAS rack it pretty much disabled traction control and ABS. So no real loss here. Also installed the washer bottle. Bled the brakes and everything is good as it was prior. So I'll have another go at getting certifications for CA smog.
Here are some pics as I'm working on adding power steering to the car.

Believe it or not, there wS a perfect pair of quarter windows at the local pick n pull from what appeared to be a coupe that was garaged kept most its life. I was able to retreive the driver side, but that passenger side was vandelized at that pick n pull. Their were multiple cars with busted windows in the general area. I even took a picture of it in disbelief. The other was one I found at a different yard that was okay, but not perfect. Wish someone would start reproducing them. They'd make so.e serious money

Yeah I wish someone would remake them cus I need a set lol..and yeah it sucks that people ruin good parts at the yards. I'm restoring mine now it looks like it's working with the filler primer method I haven't put the sealer n final black coat yet
