The two man post hole digger that you can rent from Home Depot kinda sucks when you get deep just make sure you have someone with some muscle. Last time I did a fence I used 4x4 pressure treated posts I used tens and stuck 3' of it in the ground using a 12" wide auger and I think they took about 3 bags each of post hole mix. I just mixed it in a wheel barrel post by post. I did a standard fence with a 2"x12" footer horizontal then 6' redwood fence boards on top vertical nothing fancy used a nice nail gun that shoots 16's and a small portable compressor. It's easy just string out your guide line for your posts get atleast a 4' level to plum em out. Get a framing square to mark your cuts you can use a skill saw or a miter saw if it's big enough to cut 4x4 the best one for a fence is the one that has the head that you can move forward and back so you can cut the wide boards too

be sure there is no underground utilities. i know its a backyard but ive seen it happen. call 811 and its free.

Can't agree with you more. Don't be that guy who knocks out a water pipe flooding a few backyards.
Def use pressure treated wood for your in ground posts and put a sealer on them boards.
If I decide or need to build a fence, I'm snapping a chalk line for my nail gun. I kinda have OCD and I'd want to have all my nails placed as even as possible LOL. Not to mention practically eliminating 'chine-ers'

They pretty much have you covered. If money is tight try chain length fencing. Cheap and very easy.
My dad is a carpenter and i have constructed many fences for his rentals. Feel free to PM for any tips advice you need!

+1 You'd be surprised at how many times a homeowner is on the hook for a utility repair because they didn't call in a USA dig ticket. Call it in. It's free and can potentially save you lots of money and hassle.
