Because other car companies are building them. They don't want to be left out of the competition. Diesel powered cars can get really good MPG & still be fun to drive...... Unlike a Prius.

This. Diesels in Europe are like Hybrids here. Unfortunately Americans remember the Chevy 350 Diesel and other shitbox non-turbo non-direct injection Diesels and think they're crap. New German Diesel technology is light years ahead of American Diesels.
I've got a Jetta TDI and the engine is pretty amazing. Gets 45 MPG, 236 ft/lbs of torque at 1700 RPM and a great aftermarket to support it if you want to squeeze even more power out of it.
Also, Diesel fuel here is more expensive because they don't refine as much of it as they do in Europe. Gasoline has been king here for many decades. [ 2013-10-26, 03:11 PM: Message edited by: wilit ]

BMW has had 3 series diesels here for a few years. My dad had a 335d... 265 hp and 425 ft/lbs of torque. All that in a well equipped, great handling car that would get over 40 MPG's on the freeway.

Diesels are for the car guys that want a fuel efficient car. My wifes chipped golf tdi makes 300+ft/bls tq and gets 40mpg cruising at 80. In the end, i'd rather have power and get poor gas mileage, even with my 90 mile commute.

Although the gas mileage advantage, at least compared to newer and much cheaper 40MPG commuters, is negated with the huge difference in price (30-40 cents is not uncommon) between diesel and 87 gas. To each their own I guess. [ 2013-10-27, 03:15 AM: Message edited by: xchpstang ]
