Get your emt then your medic, make sure your record is clean! get your self into really good shape and take an academy. not necessary but line time helps. learn to cook shit and have really good people skills. somebody is trying to spit, piss, shit, kick you in the face and you must still give care to your best abilities. volunteer and make your self known. its crazy competitive so good luck!

I don't suggest going the medical route right away like someone suggested. Once your a paramedic you get sucked in and are always in the ambulance and never get to fight fire. The best thing you can do is go to an academy and then apply to departments, if your in really good shape apply to the Forest Service, maybe get on a hotshot crew or an engine. It's a foot in the door and easier to get a job because its the Federal Government not the state or some large/small department that might not have the money or have 10,000 applications.

This is a story about the Tahoe Hotshots, one of the oldest Hotshot crews in the USA. I've worked for them and with them just not a whole season. They are badass. If this sounds fun to you then be a Hotshot, if this sounds half fun to you then get on a Forest Service Fire Engine. http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/nature/Life-on-the-Line-Firefighting-Kyle-Dickman.html

That's real... My brother is an EMT/Paramedic.
He's on his 5th year of trying to land a fire fighter gig and hasn't been successful yet. If you want to work in the Bay Area, be prepared for MAJOR competition. My other friend took 7yrs before he got a fire fighter gig in the Bay (San Jose).
And if you have ANY black eyes on your record, don't even waste your time. I'd sell drugs before trying to be a firefighter with a record, lol

Join the military and become a firefighter. That's what I did and I've gotten tons of certs and experience from It. my specialty is aircraft rescue and firefighting but i still get to do structural firefighting. And for the next couple of months I get to work at the base fire department which is awesome all the guys there are civilians( retired military) and the get great benefits and good pay
