Anybody know if the 99 models are solid? Also, manual vs auto in the trucks? I like auto but found a clean one with a manual transmission and I'm considering it. Will be used mostly to tow cars/camper trailers.
I know the 6.0s are problematic, but heard the same for pre 2001 7.3s

99s are solid, my buddy has one. Manuals are stronger than the autos. [ 2013-05-16, 06:42 PM: Message edited by: Wildfire532FB ]

I like my 2006 6.0, I have owned since new, I only use it for long hauls, getting 600 miles to a tank pulling a trailer, got 100K miles on it, so far only replaced the tires, batteries, alternator and FICM, going to be doing it's first brake job shortly. My relatives in Alaska have a few 6.0s and seemed to be holding up very well there. I think the key to get them to last is don't drive them like a regular car and do short trips in them, if you going to turn it on, drive like a work truck and drive it all day. I have an early 99 and it has been solid for me for the most part since i got it 7yrs or so ago. Got it with 120k on it and now have just under 190k. Only issue I had was the tranny overheating on windy roads uphill. Prolly could have solved it with just a 6.0 cooler, but decided on that and a bts tranny, now I stuggle to get it up to 140*. I also had the balljoints go out and a unit bearing last yr..so I swapped out to 06 axles and coil suspension...much stronger up front. Considering the miles, how I drive and the larger tires that were on the truck thats was good for wear on the old axles. Also, the turbo is a little smaller and winds up faster than late99+.

Rods are forged till 01' I think then they are powder metal stuff that is only good to 400 or so hp with a soft tune. Another thing is the early 99 came with a cat...make sure you have one or get one if you are smogging in ca...about $2000 new, I scored one off another forum for $100 then fabbed it to fit my 4" exhaust once every other year.
