Whether a day on the water with friends or the family, there is no place more relaxing than on a boat you own. Until I was given a boat, I never knew just how nice it is to own one. It's like a vacation you have access to at any time!
Try it out, I'm tellin ya.....

Two best days in a boat owner's life:
The day he buys it.
The day he sells it.
B - ust
O - ut
A - nother
T - housand
The best boat in the world is the boat your friend owns. Take it out, beat on it, and let him make the payments and repairs.

I hate to be negative, because some very good times in my life have been had out on the water. But boats are an expensive hobby. Stay sunburned, my friends, lol

That was me. I bought one and didnt have it inspected, so after taking it out 3 times I had to pay $1600 in repairs. I still have it though and use it a lot.

It is a very expensive hobby and I swear by the motto ," this boat does not run on friendships" ,but i do love the song "boats and hoes", cuz that's what seems to come with one , at least from my experience ... but Don I hear you on how relaxing they are ,when you are just out in the middle of the water and listening to the sound of water against your boat and enjoying a beautiful day relaxing with no worries in the world!

We just upgraded to an 06 Yamaha boat for size, and absolutely love it. But for the past 18 months we LOVED our 1973 Tahiti with a Chrysler 105 on the back! I picked up a manual on it right away and went through the bottom end etc because it had been sitting for the previous 10 years but when first fired, it was turn key! I LOVE exposing our kids to the freedom of having a boat as well as taking friends out so they can share in the relaxation.
If single, GOD I WISH I OWNED A BOAT BACK THEN....
With the family, there is no better therapy.... My wife and I don't argue all that often, but one thing we both note, we've "never" argued when on the water (which is a lot.) It's GREAT to spend the time with the kids, the two year old loves jumping off the boat, the 9 year old is getting into knee boarding etc and the 16 year old doesnt mind hanging out with "dad" so much, lol! He brings his friends camping on the boat etc. Boating is a GREAT way to keep the family together imo.
The Tahiti runs so well and is in such great shape the $2,500 I could get for it, doesn't make sense to me. I'm keeping both boats, that one for the kids and to have an extra boat on camping trips.
I'm telling you guys/girls, I "NEVER" would have thought boating was this FUN, RELAXING, EXCITING etc..... If you get a chance while you're young I suggest you "give it a shot" rather than listening to other people, many of whom never owned a boat etc.
I've got nothing to gain by any of you buying a boat (other than more crowded lakes.....) but I wish someone had conveyed this to me long ago....

I just sold my racecar and used the funds to buy a boat. It's a 2001 Malibu Sunsetter LXI with 320hp chevy made by Indmar. It is expensive but not any more than modding a mustang, and certainly a lot cheaper than racing a mustang. This will provide years of memories for my family, the same can't be said about a car.

Very cool! I caught a 70lb Sturgeon when I was maybe 10 years old with my dad on his boat. I remember it took 2 hours to get into the boat and after 30 minutes of reeling, slack, reel, slack, something jumped what looked like a mile away and dad said, "that's your fish!" I will never forget that feeling of how far it was after what already felt like forever getting it closer, lol! I may ask for details on where you go, would be a great experience for my son and me to relive!

The first time I went sturgeon fishing I was also 10 years old. It was myself and a my aunts ex. We went out past the old 7up plant in Vallejo in a 12' aluminum Klamath ( very calm day BTW) and I caught 2 keepers my first time out. It took me about 45 mins on the first one and another 30-40 mins on the second one. I will try and scan a pic later.

I am going to have to show this to my wife. I have been trying to convince her. The problem is that we have nowhere to store one and I have no time to maintain it. The boat I could afford would need maintenance! LOL!! She said that I don't need something else to maintain. With the Mustang, my dirtbike, both kid's dirtbikes, my streetbike, and the daily drivers, I am afraid that she is right! Maybe after I get paint on the outside of the house, remodel the bathrooms, swap out all the interior doors, tear out the deck and redo the backyard, put the cage in the car, install the snow kit, swap to 5-lug and Cobra discs, then I'll finally be ready for the boat. The only problem is that the kids will be out of the house by then!!

A, ask Barrie, you can afford a boat that doesnt require a bunch of your time.
B, get one soon while kids are young, best times ever with the family floating!

Congrats, we frequent Lake Sonoma and/or Berryessa almost every weekend these days. Hitting up the Delta to check out the moth ball fleet this weekend. Hopefully we can get all boats on the water together some time!

They don't burn much gas. If you fill it up once it will last all summer lol. Unless you got a jet boat. The one im getting has a 40 gallon tank. Most folks I talk to say they "might" fill it up twice all summer. Its not like driving a car

LOL, not true, you'll see. Craig it's sooo worth it and WAY cheaper than vacationing etc (which boating is to me, ahhhhhh) My Tahitti has a 15 gallon tank that I can go through if I'm playing hard ALL day on the lake. The Yamaha has a 50 gallon tank, at W.O.T. it burns 28 gallons per hour (twin engine jet boat.) LOL, don't let that fact trick you, I'm never at WOT that long. I've spend FULL days with friends and families on the lake with the Yami and never used over 15 gallons.
Boating is the most relaxing then in the world whether you're alone, with friends or with the family! Kicks ass to also spend $14 per night for a boat in camp spot at Lake Sonoma Craig! In my opinion you SAVE money owning a boat, LOL!
Can you tell I really love owning a boat/s?
Craig, that yellow boat ahead where Rhyan is juming in the water, that is Barries boat. Has a 5 liter in it I believe. Also, the night shot was during last summer at 8:45 on Lake Sonoma. We spent $15 on some sandwiches from Subway and were on the water in 80 degree weather for 3 hours after work. Talk about relaxing.... Maybe spent $12 bucks in boat gas crusing at night. Can't beat the value man!

Reason we went to a larger boat ;-)

Yeah, anyone that only fills the boat up once or twice only goes out once or twice or doesn't ski or tube behind the boat. I single ski so it uses a ton of gas pulling me up and I also use a lot throwing the kids around on the tube. My dad's 73 Tri-hull with an 85 horse V-4 Evinrude would go through close to 17 gallons on one day of skiing. If we beached right next to the ramp we could get away with a little less. It has 2 6 gallon tanks and I would have to bring an extra 5 gallons with me. I am also referring to the gas it takes to tow the boat to the lake at 10mpg. I like Berryessa so that is where I would be going.
Don, yes I have been in Barry's boat twice. I towed it to Berryessa behind my Ram a couple years when Barry, my cousin, and I went. The family and I met him at Sonoma for a day on the lake when he was camping there a couple years ago. Damn, it was probably 3 years ago that I towed it to Berryessa. I don't think he had it for long when we did that trip and that was the last time I was there, unless you count when I drove the Stang around the lake up there to break-in my new trans and clutch.
I want one but my wife is dead set against it. I'll keep working on her.

And here's where my small boat comes in handy. I have a 12' Portabote with a 5hp nissan outboard. Only goes about 15mph with two people @ 3/4 throttle, but I can spend all day out on the water and only use about 1 gallon of gas. The car we drive it to the lake with gets about 35mpg, and since the boat folds up they think it's a board of some sort and only charge us for general admission. Seats 3 adults and 1-2 children depending on their size.

Hey, you keep saying how relaxing it is, but loading all that stuff into the Tahiti in that one picture doesn't sound relaxing! Did you get your wife to do it for you? LOL! That brings back memories of going to Berryessa with my parents in their tiny 1962 14.5'boat with a 50hp Merc on it and trying to pack everything in there. The boat would barely move on the way to where we beached it. Then we would unload everything and all the extra people to ski. We had to get up on doubles and kick a ski off because the boat didn't have enough power to get us up on the single.
It is relaxing at the lake, but it is a lot of work to get everything ready to go and then put away when you get home. Camping for a few days makes all that work more worth it though.

Boating is for some people, other people not so much ;-)
We plained ALL the way across the lake at 25 (3/4 throttle) with 3 adults, 2 kids and all that stuff. Making it fit was like playing Tetris. Could have easily made 2 trips but I was good at Tetris as a kid so I gave it a shot. That 105 hp on the back pushes the Tahitti well and all the stuff has a place in the garage so what looks terrible to you is 30 minutes time back then ;-)
Also we don't pack lite when camping. That black roll is a carpet for entering the tent etc. We bring a shit ton of stuff because it makes it easy. The boat we have now will COMFORTABLY accomodate 5 times that stuff and 10 passengers so we'll really be camping in style now!
Camping with the family is worth any issue, have come up with some ever lasting experiences boat camping!

Same here, injected, 10 person rating, storage and seeting like crazy etc! I chose the Yamaha due to the swim deck layout 100%. The twin jet engine took some getting used to, but I love the boat/size and the 9 foot bimini!

Just saw a guy filling up his wake board boat at the gas station. His tow rig was an escalade hybrid...... That wouldn't have been my first choice on a towing vehicle LOL.

I own a houseboat. What I like to do is invite women over and take them to the middle of the ocean and they always ending up sleeping with me. It's all in the implication bro.

Im going to buy a decent fishing/cruising boat for next summer. I went on a trip last weekend with my buddy and a couple of 8/10 blondes and im hooked. Owning a boat beats the hell out of throwing thousands at a car to go .5 seconds faster. Most fun ive had in years.
Question, How reliable are older boats? I see a couple decent sized ones for $4000-$5000 from the early 90s. Seems like a good start boat size for someone like me.

As long as you keep up on them they are just like cars... other than my lil mishaps that lowered my out drive down on the freeway, it's never gave me any problems.. Took me a while to fix all the crap that broke, But now I can pretty much take apart my own boat.. f' shop prices..

All in the boat you buy. Boats get bad reps from someone in your position buying a boat that has no clue what to look for, then getting nickle n dimed. Also, buy a book and learn to do all your OWN maintenance yourself. To take my twin engine Yamaha in to the dealer for oil changes to both engines they want between $500 and $800, NO JOKE. It takes an hour MAX, some mobil 1 oil, two $15 filters and a pump to suck the old oil out. Took me and a buddy an hour total which included alcoholic consumption in my driveway.
My 73 Tahitti I bought a Chilton "type" book and learned to take the top and bottom ends apart, change impellars, fluids etc. It broke down 1 time on the water where I was towed back, turned out nothing more than fouled the spark plugs (old ass boat, mixing oil/fuel and going through no wakes zones = no bueno over time.)
That being said, there is no better way to spend a day in the sun than on your boat floating in the water.......
Locked and loaded for a 48 hour camping trip, LOL. Bow is FULL of wood

HIDNNOS did you hear that they pretty much opened all the resorts at berryessa.. I guess pleasure cove is running most of them.

No, not at all? My buddy keeps his boat in Markly Cove so I normally launch from there. Opened the resorts like they are up and running or just that you can launch from them? Free? To launch from Markley or Pleasure it's like $25 (if you don't have a hookup)

Out of curiousity, What is the best strategy for beaching your boat without tearing anything up? Is it safe? I heard some of these lakes have little coves you can BBQ on
Posted by hidnn.o.s. (Member # 1219) on
:
The Nautiques etc have fins on them in the center/middle, those can't be beached. Mine has what's called a KEEL guard, which is an extra pad running down the center for beaching. I only beach where I can see the ground, clear any big rocks or other things and it's never been a problem. Another option, is drop anchor about 30 feet off shore attached to a bungee line. Then back the boat to shore, let anyone off that wants off and attach a long rope of dock line to the back of the boat. Once you're all off, let the bungee line pull the boat back out to the lake, then when it's taught, tie that rope to something on shore like a shore spike. Then when you want back on you just pull the boat to you/shore, everyone gets on and you let the rope go and float back out. That way is generally if you're camping off shore overnight etc.
Sounds complicated but both are EASY to do. Always willing to lend a hand if you meet up at a lake I'm going to. I'm no expert and often learn from others or modify what others do to make things easier in my opinion.

Yeah, that's why I'm going to wait until next summer to get into something. Going to spend a couple months learning about different models and motors etc. I'll do all the maintenance myself on anything I get so I atleast got that covered.

So basically I would need to buy an anchor buddy right? Sorry for the dumb questions. I'm kinda new to boating thanks for the info

NO worries, what kind of boat do you have? Does yours have fins on the bottom middle of the boat?
This shot should help you. If you look close, infront of my boat is my shore spike, (with blue tube around it). I tie to that and trust me, boat isn't going ANYWHER with it attached. My buddy doesn't have one so he ties to anything on land that also isn't going to move. Both options are available, I like the shore spike so I never have to look for something solid:
This boat to the right has the fins so they can't beach, so they did exactly what I explained and were on/off all day all weekend

My boat is the brown and white reinell 217 on page 3. I dont "think" it has fins on the bottom of it. With the shore spike in front, Your boat did'nt move around from side to side since it was not anchored in the back. i'm thinking about going to folsom and everybody is telling me to go to the coves and BBQ but i think I would need to beach my boat somehow to do it. Like I said, Im a rookie at this

I knew "nothing" before starting this stuff last year when I got a boat. I learn by asking quesitons and observing what others do. Don't be shy, people on boats are way chill and willing to always lend a hand or answer a question.
Enjoy man, if you make it to Lake Sonoma or Berryessa let me know

Fyi i guess its really low tide in july? So the campsites are not steps away from the lake... and it was ridiculously hot, that we had to leave a day early
Posted by hidnn.o.s. (Member # 1219) on

ALL lakes seem to be very low due to lack or rain we had. I loved it at the time because I've been boating EVERY month over the last year, but am paying for it now in low lakes Having a jet boat isnt' as fun when the lakes are low cause they can suck up weeds etc. I haven't had that issue YET, but many people on the boards have.

True, but honestly, until you back a boat "YOU OWN" into a lake and chill for the day you really can't love it like a boat owner. My friends don't "get it" either. I litteraly have tried giving my Tahitti to friends to use with their families just so they get a taste of the relaxation, but they are worried about damage etc etc etc. In the end, I get it. Until I was "given" a boat I never had the love for it that I have now

LUCKY ASS! I wanna check out Oroville, but more in the early summer/late spring. they let a lot of water out that lake.

Yeah, July is about as late as I want to go. In this picture it's 80' down and dropping 1-2' per day. Be careful in the spring my Dad says there is a lot of logs in the water when the lake gets full. When it starts dropping they all stick to the side.
