So my DD ford escort blew a head gasket so I'm now looking to buy a new or used car. These are what the car needs to have: 1. 4 doors 2. As close to or over 30 mpg. 3. Good crash test record ( would you put your baby in it ? ) 4. 28k or lower if new.
So far I've been looking at the Ford fiesta hatchback & I also looked at a focus ST...... It's a great car and fits all of my qualifications plus fun to drive. Here's a link to my top pick at the moment. http://m.ford.com/smartphone/highlightsdetails.html?cid=car&mid=Focus&year=2013&fid=0#appsimHome
So what do you guys think?

I would go for an 06-09 civic sedan. You can get one through a private party with around 50k for 12k or so depending on condition.

I just bought a 2012 Fiesta. I love it. I am getting 41mpg in the city and on the freeway the gas gauge seems to go up. LOL I got the base model because I dont need a lot and it came with ipod hook up. I paid 11,995 for it. put 15,000 on it since November. Great car.

Just got a 2012 Nissan versa 4dr hatchback 1.6 ltr 124 HP 127trq says 30 city 33hwy but I actually get 28mpg mixed.full tank is 10.50-10.75gal and get 250-274miles on a full tank. 10,800miles on it.Sticker price was $16,500 but got it for $14,800 out the door in total was $18,000. Family likes it and I love the 5yr bumper to bumper that I got.
I got this car less than 2 months ago, and I feel ripped off being that i heard on the radio that the 2013 is coming out for $12,500 with no miles But good car

Honda Civic or nothing at all. I test drove most of the cars in it's class before buying my 2nd one. Nothing handles better, and feels better in the driver seat than a Civic. Good on gas, can maneuver the hell out of it in the city. Low maintenance, and even if you do have to fix a few things here and there, its CHEAP!!!
With good freeway (65-70mph) driving I can reach up to 40-42mpg in my 2005 Civic. City driving (because Iam in San Francisco during the weekdays), I usually hit about 33-35mpg.
Got my civic last year with 55k for $6700 private party. It is the standard VP (Value Package) base model. Really good deals on Civics are hard to come by, but when you see one; DO NOT HESITATE to go out and drive it, call the poster right away.
And if you really want to get top notch gas mileage, go with the Chevy Volt. I know I know this is a Ford Forum, but everything is out the door when I see quality/reliability/efficiency in other manufacturers. [ October 26, 2012, 04:24 PM: Message edited by: BLK35th ]

I really like your idea of the ST, best of all worlds. Remember, you need to keep the fun factor in mind otherwise the drive is just too mundane. Ford is just kicking ass right now in all markets. I bought a new SHO in 2011 and it supplies all my needs and mpg too. I chipped it so it's 425 hp now and super quick! You could opt for a used on for 28k

^ Yeah that FUN factor is part of the reason I want the ST...... I did hear that they are coming out with a turbo fiesta . That would save me a couple bucks.
*** Thanks guys for all your input. I might kick around the idea of a Honda to. They are great cars and also cheap when it comes to parts. I did look up parts on the Fiesta and they are also cheap. Steeda has a complete lowering kit for about 300 bucks. Rotors, shocks, filters and stuff are also pretty cheap too. That Eco Boost motor is a little cramped in the focus but it looks to be decent as far as working on it down the road. Gonna keep looking around and I'll let you guys know what I end up buying.

I just picked up an 2010 mazdaspeed3 for $20k. Had 11k miles. Best bang for the buck out there. Should be able to get about 28 mpg. Has more power and tq than the ST. And its pretty much a Ford and Mazda hybrid has a bunch of fomoco parts all over it. Can't beat 260 HP and 280 tq. [ October 26, 2012, 04:59 PM: Message edited by: Adam5.0 ]

Hows the trq steer on that thing? I know the focus didn't have it nearly as much as some other FWD cars out there. I heard the Mazda is pretty noticeable when you get on it.

My cousin has one and we work together. It is a very nice car but I know parts are gonna cost more then the Focus. Plus I wanna race him at the track and beat him in a Ford. He put an annoying fart can on his VW so now it sounds like shit LOL.

On a flat smooth road its not that bad, but you do have to hold on tight or your going to find yourself in the other lane. Torque steer is there, just something you get used to and learn how the car reacts

Well my pops said I can use his Cheby when I need to transport the dogs. But I just told the wife about test driving a ford and she tried to talk shit. She really thinks that Toyota, Honda & Nissan are the oldy cars worth buying...... This from my wife who had to have that used Freelander money pit.
Not to mention her parents Toyota broke down on them & they bought another one to replace it.
