When something breaks they cost more to fix. They are very comfortable cars to drive. Here's a tip for everyone looking to buy a used car. Go to your local autoparts store and find out how much normal wear parts cost for that paticular car. ( brake pads, rotors, plugs, wires..) That will help you figure out if maintenance is going to cost more then normal.

^ this.. I do this with every car I buy. Those s4s are very nice the interior fit and finish on th audis is great. Power is good , but to work on the engine on most jobs first step is pulling the front bumper and support . They call it service position lol

Stay away from any Audi prior to 07, transmission problems, coil pack problems, early engine failures from Oil gunk problems, the list goes on and on.
Unless you have deep wallets and enjoy paying for repairs PASS!

I'll be selling my '01 S4 Avant pretty soon because child #3 is on the way and I need a bigger car. Everything said here is true, but parts are only expensive if you buy OEM, the generic stuff is much much cheaper and in some cases, better. If you do your own work, you don't have to worry about the cost of repairs too much. There's also HUGE aftermarket support for those models. A WRX is also a good option and will have a lower cost of ownership but it isn't nearly as nice overall. The A4 is also a much much cheaper car to repair. But, the pros for me is having decent gas mileage at the stock 250hp tune then flipping the switch for almost 400hp, AWD and never having to worry about traction rain or shine.

Could always try to find a low mileage Subaru. Parts are cheap on those cars and they are more reliable than the crappy Audi's. My dad has an 03 A4 and that thing completely fell apart the moment his warranty ended. I think he is up to like $12k in repair costs for shit breaking.

i own a 2001 s4, and i wish i never bought it- ive literally had nothing but problems with it since about day 3 up until now... and that was about 2 years ago. ive never seen a make with more problems. i have an evo 8 now, get one of those or an sti and steer clear of audi. shit id even take a r32 over that. yea..
and yes, expensive to repair even not oem.
even on some s4 forums they like to go by the saying - "our car might break down in a race, but well catch up and win" or something lame like that.
the really messed part is when its running right, god damn is it an amazing car!

Audi's are real good cars but true they are real Xpensive to maintain just like beemers and Benz for example I have a 03 Audi A-4 Turbo my rack and pinion went out that was $1600 Water pump went out another $850 with new tension pulleys belts and all and many more things but now I got a car like new if u like it and dnt mind paying $150 for oil changes go for it.

I own a 01 s4 and love it... Before that I had a 1998 a4 1.8t and loved that
The bad gas mileage is the shits in the city probably 14-16 On the freeway it isn't too bad. I take it to the snow all the time and haven't had a problem with it
As for regular services my brother is an Audi master tech so all I pay for is parts at cost ... [ July 10, 2012, 03:14 PM: Message edited by: 1SLOWLX ]
