SILLY SALLY, .22's ARE FOR KIDS!
But on another note, have you looked into .380's?

That's the thing with rimfire pistols, they are picky about ammo and have a tendency to double feed and jam regularly if the right ammo isn't used.

My Sig Mosquito did that until I filed the leading edges on the clips. Gave it a little more clearance so it doesn't hook ribbed bullets. Now it loads a lot better.

I wouldn't go .22lr for self protection, but if you're opposed to anything, but .22lr get a Ruger Mark III, or similar. I haven't owned any other .22lr pistol that's under $500 that is anywhere close to as reliable as the Rugers. I've owned the Walther P22 and G22 both were pretty much junk. I also owned the Sig .22lr pistol also junk. Both had double feeds, stovepipes, and any other jam you could imagine. Ruger suffered from none of this even with the cheapest bulk ammo.
If you're open minded I would much rather get a 9mm. Good overall round. If you need more power you could always step up to +p, or my EDC round of choice is Federal +p+.

Ken, i love my sig mosquito. Plus it is the sexiest looking .22 by far.
I would also suggest that you get her a 9 or .380 if its going to be for self protection.

It's much better to get a gun she can control and make shots that count. If you can get shots in the vital area it doesn't matter what you use.

I bought my lady a Kimber Pepper Blaster 2 to keep in her purse. She's still to uneasy on shooting. I figured its a good happy medium.
