Ok I just thought I would ask CA Fords for some input on a paper I am doing for school.

Im doing an argumentative research paper on Government financial aid to individuals/families.

What do you guys think of it: Good? Bad? How long should one be on it for?

Any input is appreciated [patriot]

It's good to give govt assistance, but govt assistance is abused too hard in some cases. IMO it all depends on a case by case basis. maybe the individuals should be monitered more if they recieve federal benefits to make sure they dont buy crack with their money.

Its cool man, I wish they would drug test people with no job, and the government should give you a lil extra money if you sign something and can prove you're looking for a job daily for a certain amount of time. For the people that have a job and still get some money, thats cool but each person/family has their own circumstances and the government does a "once size fits all" type of deal so I feel many things are over looked and excess money and time is spent.

There were medical offices who would
Take advantage of elderly people with govt assistance and would diagnose them with things they don't have nor ever had. You can write about that and how it could be regulated.

Its definitely a highly flawed system with almost no credibility that nowadays is highly abused by the public... I know it would take a little money to monitor the individuals that receive benefits but Im sure that if done so would end up saving more on faulty claims Imo. Good luck.

Anybody seeking financial aids(hand outs) should get drug tested.

One time assistance would be better for families that are in need by no fault of their own. It would help keep the babymakers legs closed if they didnt get increase in handouts each time they pop out a kid. [Smile]

Ok thanks so far guys. Im all for the drug testing and them being monitored but I dont want to say too much I just want to hear sides.

As far as doing a one size fits all, looks like they actually do some work into seeing how much a family does need but not 100% accurate.

Does anyone feel we should get rid of it?

I do. Maybe not 100% get rid of it, as I do believe there are some families who are truly in need. BUT, what has the US government done for us that is really a success? USPS? Failure. EPA? Failure. TSA? Failure. Oh wait, the IRS is great in taxing us to death and taking away our hard earned dollars. This is a complicated issue though, and I don't have an answer I can just draft up over the course of a post on CAFords.

In my opinion, when you give out government handouts, financial aid, benefits, this welfare, that welfare, people become lazy. Let's look at unemployment insurance for example. Did I take it? Yes. I got laid off in 08, and I shamefully had to pick up unemployment for a couple of months while I looked for other jobs. I was one of those lucky ones who was able to start work pretty quickly. Then let's look at some of the other people I knew who got laid off in the same time period. They took FULL advantage of the 2? year unemployment period, and saw it as a vacation! The same applies for the scumbag selling drugs on the corner. Instead of having some pride and working for a living, scumbag sells drugs on the side and applies for welfare, sucking us working citizens dry and abusing the system.

Make people work. You want some benefits? Fine, our highways in California are pretty dirty. You must pick up trash for X hours a week, and you must actively pursue a job or an education so you positively add to society, not be some money sucking lazy leech. Now, this doesn't include everyone, as I believe there are really people who are handicapped and physically can't work (look at some of our vets that come home with lost limbs). These people should be eligible for some sort of assistance.

Do I even have to mention octomom?

My couple of cents.

I look at unemployment differently since you pay into it when you're working and the award is tiered to what you made. People are not getting rich off unemployment. Yet sometimes it can pay more than if you take the first job thrown at you. You can't blame people for not taking a Job a fraction of what they made prior if unemployment brings in more. It's not a free handout like welfare can be. Or like disability income... People claiming back issues yet you'll see them on Saturday plucking weeds in the front yard with no back issues.

I do kind of understand this. But, let's say the government decided to not be a nanny for everyone and let the individual manage their finances. I now know not to live paycheck to paycheck, build up a savings account that will help to cover your ass in a negative event, etc. Or what about those who are fortunate to be employed for 30+ years and retire, having never been unemployed in their life? I'm not sure how this works, do they get their unemployment insurance returned to them in some form? I don't think unemployment insurance is necessarily a bad idea, but I don't think it should be mandated for everybody to participate in.

I guess that's a separate topic though, you're right - it's not the same as a handout. Sorry for straying off topic, but I think about these things a lot!

Regarding school financial aid: Schools expensive. More than it should be in many cases. Shit,, books alone are crazy at times. I think financial aid is a great idea for school and honestly I see it going away no time soon. The government needs people going to school, that helps this country progress. Shit.. biggest reason for poverty is uneducated lazy people IMO. Yes I receive financial aid for going to school. I also work 40+ hours a week. With living expenses for us in the bay area financial aid helps alot. They do monitor it. If your failing classes or just dropping them they will take it away from you. They also verify the family income and give you an amount based on that and the amount of units you take on. School is no easy task and the people who apply themselves to progress deserve the assistance. I consider school harder than going to work sometimes honestly. Like some of you said we pay taxes and for me it's just like getting my money back. Sure there's some students that don't work but so be it. They get more time to study and stuff...maybe one day they'll be that doctor that saves our ass or something.

All other type of government assistance I don't really feel great about but hey at least this country gives SOME of the money they take back to the people. [Big Grin]

Goodluck on your paper bro [patriot]
