Depends on what your looking for, use, caliber, price? There are a ton of good guns out there.

Just something to go out to the shooting range and have fun with. Probably something under 500

Under $500 bucks and range gun, MHO I would say check out a used Glock, S&W or a Ruger and in 9mm to keep down the price of range time.

He's not going to find that under 500 bucks LOL. I'd also say a Glock in that price range in .40 or 9mm......
Oh and The Lakers can suck it!!!

You're in Sac right? Check out River City Gun Exchange they sell a ton of used and Agency Trade In guns. With tax and Paperwork it's very easy to get well above $500 on a new gun.

I've had a love/hate deal w/ RCGE. They've got a couple GREAT dudes there who know all the answers to your questions, but there's also a couple assholes as well. Keep your eyes out for the black dude Lawrence (used to work at Sac Armory) - he's real helpful and will take the time to answer your questions.
Like fstryde said, check an agency trade-in - great prices for solid guns, and the only way you'll get into a SIG for your price-point. Keep in mind ammo prices, as that'll add up pretty quickly. Understand that you'll pay nearly double for .45 over 9mm for range ammo, and if that makes a difference, don't kid yourself that it'll get any cheaper down the road
good luck w/ your search

Ammo targets range LOL unfortunately it all adds up.
And yeah I hear you on the assholes there's at least one at every gun shop. I actually walked out of Just Guns on Watt a while back cause one of the guys was pissing me off, every other dude there is cool but this one f'n guy was just a Dbag!
