Good luck finding one in a local store.
I had one on my Springfield GI. It was one of these: http://www.efkfiredragon.com/1911-government-style-bushing-replacement-compensators.html
It helped a bit with the recoil. What works really well is the ones that are integrated into the barrel like this:

why do you want one ?
if its for a silencer i get it...but if it isnt...you wont see any change in recoil

^ He has a good point. Compa are going to work better on something that has a little more velocity..... Like a 38 super & a 10mm are good examples of rounds that work better with a comp.

What? How would one put a suppressor on a gun with a compensator? Especially since you can't even get a suppressor in CA to begin with. Plus a compensator would completely negate any effect a suppressor would have. [ March 11, 2012, 10:50 PM: Message edited by: wilit ]

i have a kimber 1911 like the one above without comepensator.. went to the range whit a buddy of mine who has a springfield 1911 gi with compensator..and i felt a pretty big difference in recoil between our guns..it actually felt pretty good. so im not 100 percent in agreement with it not making a difference..

compensators are mainly good for rapid firing from what i've read, i also had a black one, picked them up for around $40. If anything they just make the gun look badass!!! haha
