Yes a bigger cam helps exhaust flow/sound A LOT but if ur running a stock little bumpstick MAC mufflers are too quiet in my 02..I just installed a MAC catback and bbk o/r x pipe on my 5.0 and its wayy mellow for me..race bullets or single chamber flows are def next on the list..

When I bought my fox, it had one of the early sets of flowmasters (aka drone masters) while it sounded nice I could not stand the drone. I recently put on a set of magnaflows and really like the sound. Nice n quiet when needed, Nice & loud when you stomp on it.

Hands down Dynomax race bullets are the best sounding mufflers on a fox with stock heads and cam. Once you upgrade the H/C/I, and I'm not talking a GT40 set-up, it's just way too loud. I had to throw a dronemaster cat-back on just to quiet my car down some and those still draws way too much attention.
My next mufflers will be Spintechs.

I've recently been swapping out my mufflers on my fox.So far i've put on some Slp loudmouth 1s,Magnaflow bullets,And Mac mufflers with equal legth header and an O/r x pipe,I can only run flowtube turn downs due to a panhard bar wich wont let me run tailpipes unless i customized some....Anyway they all sound like crap!...So i'm guessing the only way to get the true sound of a muffler is by running tailpipes lol. I took my 'tried n true' equal length shorties, O/R h-pipe, and 2 chamber flows out for a spin and I gotta say nothing beats the sound.
It's all matter of preference tho. Some like the raspy x-pipe sound over the h-pipe's throatier sound. I just think the H-pipe sound fits better for the design scheme of the car. That being said I'd prefer an x-pipe on an SN-95 and up stang tho. As for the mufflers..I've tried a few different brands and always end up coming back to the flows. I don't really mind the drone that most people complain about, but I guess I've gotten used to it having driven a 5.0 daily for the last several years. My simple & plain setup works great for me
