Just got a 2012 5.0 and loving it. Im still breaking it in and was wondering what else to do. Already ordered full exhaust (Borla catback and off road x) and my suspension KW V3 coil overs. Just wondering if you guys can give me some input. Im trying to find out which intake is the best because as soon as I get that Im going to have it tuned. If you guys could let me know what other mods would be good. Been out of stangs for a while so Im kind of out of the loop.

I will post pics in the next few days

Does anyone know who is doing tuning for these yet. I thought about going to AED but I would like to find somewhere local to get a baseline before my mods and after.

the boss 302 intake manifold, jlt intak or just a k&n filter, and 4.10's easy low 12 car [patriot]

I thought about 3.73s since I dont want to set it up for drag. Thats the reason why I went with the KW V3 coil overs. Just trying to cruise and smash on people every know and then.

Thats true, I had 4.10s on my 2001 saleen and it was a pain in the ass shifting all the time. I might actually look into that now. Thanks [Wink]

Also alot of the JLT's intakes say needs a tune. Can I put it on and drive for a while without a tune or is that a bad idea?

you can order the one with the sct kit (tuner n intak) your going to need it regardless if your going to get it dyno tuned, if not you should be good you just wont feel th hp difference

Take it to Ditos Motors South San Francisco. They have already tuned a few new 5.0's. Ask for Rob

+1 mainly on that 302 manifold

Does ford offer the "red" key like they do for the boss? I would hold off on the tune and save for a blower.

What is the "RED" key?

Posted by 87MclarenMustang (Member # 10695) on :

The "red key" was only offered on the boss package. Essentially what it does is adjust the pcm and basically recalibrates the vehicle as a race car. Adjusting fuel, cam timing, engine braking and other aspects giving it more lower end torque and better performance.

AED is doing amazing things with these. Just an intake, exhaust and tune cars are putting down 410+ RWHP. Shawn is, from what I have read, one of the best in the country with the new 5.0

AED for the win. I have never been but there's alot of people here who have and they do great work apparently.

I wonder if that is even better than a good tune on a dyno. Intersting though, I didnt like the price tag on the Boss though.

I talked to sean and he assured me he has done many new 5.o's with great results. Im probably going to take it there but I was hoping to have one closer for the baseline dyno and tune so I didnt have to drive the 2.5 hour trip four times. Also I want to keep the baseline and tuned dyno run on the same dyno.

Unless you can afford to pay for the possibility of an engine damge, I would not add a tune to a new 5.0 that is still under warranty.

issued a TSB today for F-150 and Mustang vehicles with the 5.0 L V-8 telling dealers to watch for engine modifications.

The TSB includes pictures of pistons damaged by aftermarket tuners, very similar format to the Ecoboost TSB, along with a flow chart indicating when the dealer should cancel the warranty.

The flow chart does show that the failure must have been caused by the modification in order to cancel the warranty, so same as always - just be aware that Ford has provided the dealers with a very specific list (including detailed pictures) of what to look for to find tuned engines.

Here's the text of the TSB (#11-7-7) - note that there are pictures and diagrams in the actual TSB that aren't shown here.

ISSUE:

Some 2011 F-150 and 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with 5.0L engine may have unauthorized modifications to the powertrain hardware and/or calibration which may result in exceeding component design limits. Such modifications could cause damage to the powertrain and/or void the factory powertrain warranty.
ACTION:

Follow the Service Guidelines.
SERVICE GUIDELINES

Inform owners that the current 5.0L calibrations adjust fuel and spark settings for maximum performance with production hardware, while protecting the engine over a wide range of operating conditions. This includes a knock sensor calibration enabling optimized performance based on fuel grade usage see Owner's Guide for details. Aftermarket hardware and calibrations risk damage to the engine.
Unauthorized calibration modifications may or may not be detectable using standard tools Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS), Portable Diagnostic Software (PDS), NGS+ VCM. Changes can be made to the calibration and flashed to the powertrain control module (PCM) through the on-board diagnostics (OBD) port. Physical modifications to the hardware may or may not be present. If aftermarket power/torque-increasing modifications are suspected, care should be taken to record and store the following items: Permanent diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), pending DTCs, freeze frame data, mode 6 and mode 9 data. The data should be printed and attached to the repair order for later reference.
The DTCs, freeze frame data, mode 6 and 9 data can be obtained by using the IDS, PDS or NGS+VCM under tool box selection. The powertrain tab will provide the OBD test modes tab and mode 6 and 9 data selection after the vehicle has been identified.
Attempting to increase the engine output via recalibrating the PCM may result in poor drivability, DTCs, or component failures. A partial list of calibration induced component failures is given below: Excessive Cylinder Pressure And Temperature

Piston damage
Spark over-advanced (knock-induced damage)
Insufficient enrichment
Catalyst damage
Increased RPM Limit/Overspeed

Piston damage
Connecting rod damage
Oil pump damage
Catalyst damage
Clutch damage
Knock Sensor Calibration Changes

Piston and/or ring damage due to improper knock control
Hardware Modifications:

The following list contains items that are frequently modified in an effort to increase the engines torque/power output. Modifying these items may, or may not improve the performance, but can lead to drivability issues, DTCs and possibly component failures:
Air induction system (air box, air filter, zip tube)
Super chargers
Nitrous oxide systems
Throttle bodies
Exhaust air path/system
Review Engine Damage:

Common failures associated with unauthorized modifications have included:
DTCs present indicating cylinder misfires (P0300 - P0308)
Cylinder/piston damage resulting in a misfire, low compression, noise
Unusual Clutch wear/damage
Piston damage - light knock (Figure 1)
Piston damage - heavy knock (Figure 2)
Evaluation Guidelines Chart (Figure 3)
