I was on my way home from San jose on i80 and chp pulled me over and said my exhuast was too loud and was illegally modified. It has stock manifolds 4 cat h pipe and flowmasters that are dumped. I told him I was on the way home from picking up new exhuast and it would be quieter since it had tailpipes. I showed him the exhuast and he said it was basically straight pipe with baffles? It is a spintech side exit cat back and it bolts to my stock pipe with cats. Further more I showed him the smog paperwork from 6 days ago and how clean it burned. He said he can't believe it passed and gave me the ticket anyway. WHAT THE FUCK. Now I have to get it reffereed. Do I go to court and fight this?

it doesnt matter if you pass smog, its the db levels that the "law" requires your car to be. With this economy, they are looking for anything to make money for the state
Modification of Exhaust Systems
27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.
(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment. Amended Sec. 10, Ch. 92, Stats. 2001. Effective January 1, 2002.
only way you'll win is to go back to stock

I honestly can't see a four cat car with 2 1/4 inch flows and a 5 1/2 inch turn down exceeding 95 db when my long tube off road x race bullet high comp cobra was 135 db unless the reader was way off calibration

you dont need to go to the ref. you revert it to stock and get a cop to sign it off. if you are lucky, you'll find a lazy cop who wont even look at the car and will just sign it off. thats what my brother did late last year.

I definately has to be reffed as he told me it was non correctable and must be removed from roadway until it is in compliance and to further prove his point he put a ref sticker on the ticket

I got the same ticket, never went to the REF, I went to court and asked to pay the fine. I told them that the car wasnt running right and wasnt able to get it fixed in the near future, and ended up paying a $20 fine.

I got pulled over cus a cop saw my shiny tips. He didnt give me a ticket but they'll pull you over for anything these days.
I did get pulled over on my gsxr and cop said it was over the db levels. I asked him if he can show me the db level that he acquired to actually give him the right for me to be pulled over. Got him stuck. Told me to slow it down and let me go. [ March 16, 2009, 05:00 PM: Message edited by: 03gtPONY ]

I got the same ticket a while back. Go to court and tell the judge you want to fix the exhaust. I did just that and the judge change the ticket to a fix it and gave me a few weeks to have it fixed. Left court and drove to chp office and got ticket signed off. Only paid $10 fee.
