I'm looking to purchase a used F250 diesel crew cab short bed truck. I don't know what years came out with no problems??? thanks for the help.

The 03-04 6.0L diesels were the trucks that had the most issues. I own an 05 F350 and had a few bugs right away, but the truck has 91,000 on it now and has been running great. With just a Edge programmer it turned 14.7 @ 90 MPH in the 1/4 mile.

As Drew said the 03's are the worst! Try to avoid the 99's also as they have a few issues between the early and later model 99's.
I own an 02 7.3... one of these days I will take it to the track and see what it runs... plenty of mods!

cool thanks for the info!

try and get a manual too if your into that?? the auto's don't like to handle too many mods.
IMO....ford fucked up when they ditched the 7.3 and went to 6.0 then 6.4 now there going 6.7 they should have stuck with one thing and made it better. i am a die hard powerstroke fan but would never rule out a good deal on a cummings. [ March 04, 2009, 01:16 PM: Message edited by: 89bluenotch ]

Another thing note worthy would be the kick ass fuel milage of the 05-07 6.0L My truck, again with just the programmer just reciently averaged 19.3 MPG on a trip from Vancouver Washinton back here to Cameron Park while pulling my car trailor! (empty)
On a past trip to North Idaho, again pulling an empty car trailor, I saw 21 MPG with the only different mod being that I disconnected my exhaust right at the down pipe for the trip.
Also, keep in mind that my truck is a F350 crew cab long bed 4x4. So in a 2x4 or even a short bed version there could be more MPG gain.

I bet that was loud. haha i run straight piped exhaust and it's loud enough with it piped all the way to the rear!
and yea the 6.0s aren't the most trustworthy motor, they do have a good automatic tranny behind it though. The tranny behind the 7.3s isn't as strong but it can be modified and made stronger too. Just kind of sucks because it's only a 4 speed vs. a 5 speed on the 6.0.
The 6.0s do get significantly better mileage than the 7.3s. i have a super cab/short bed 4x4 with a lift and i get 11mpg around town, 16-17 on the highway [ March 04, 2009, 02:24 PM: Message edited by: NiftyWhiteFifty ]

Drew, how loud was the track with no exhaust, and why did you run it like that? I don't run a CAT, or muffler, and it isn't bad, but I bet it would be with no exhaust at all?

Listen to Drew.
I did & couldn't be happier with my '01 PSD. Avg 17-18mpg mixed driving & 20-21 Hyw with the mods I've done (2WD shortbed 'lightweight' F350). Of course I WISH I had 4V heads like the 6.0.....but my little 7.3 gets by okay.

My truck has a cat and a stock muffler. Well the whole exhaust setup is stock for that matter. I disconnected the exhaust at the down pipe to see what gains there were to be had should I remove the cat and muffler perminately from the stock system.
As far as how loud it was, well, it actually isn't that bad at all driving around town and cruising down the freeway at low-mid load part throttle, but when you go WOT its is a major ! It's a cool exhaust note that it makes at WOT. Doesn't really sound like a diesel at all, it just sounds scary...lol Also, with just the down pipe the truck sounds like a jumbo freaking jet at idle while its warming up in the mornings.
Overall, I didn't mind having the exhaust disconnected save for the fact that its pretty hokie. I'm actually going to end up just running an electric cutout that is boost activated. This way the truck is quiet sitting at a stop light, but it will still be open exhaust while driving.
I figure with the exhaust mod and the new MAX MPH water/meth. on the truck I could easily see a 3-4 MPG increase in fuel milage from where its at now with the exhaust connected, (not to mention drop a little ET off the 1/4 mile time ).

All model years have their problems.
99-03 7.3L: Cam sensor problems, updated cam sensor problems, under valve cover harness melt/come loose, in tank fuel sending unit clogs up (looses fuel pressure, drops injectors), transmission does not hold up very well with major horse power.
2003-2004.25 6.0L: They have harness issues, high pressure oil pump has a service life of 120,000 to 200,000 miles. Cali trucks have inferred EBP calibration, very tempermental to mods and small drivability issues. Updated FICM calibration will toast the original FICM at one point. Turbo unison ring can stick to the center housing rotating assembly, causing a low/erratic boost concern. The oil cooler can become restricted (holds up better than later model oil coolers, different manufacturer), which will restrict coolant flow through the EGR cooler. Blown EGR cooler = 10 psi of coolant going in the engine.
2005-2007 6.0L: Due to redesigned high pressure oil pump these trucks are prone to high pressure oil leaks. Most common are the STC fitting and HP oil rail plug o-rings. A .10 cent o-ring can leave a truck stranded on the side of the road. There's an updated STC fitting, holds up well. These trucks will also waste their original FICMS. The turbo center sections were redesigned sometime in 06, not prone to sticking but still happens. These years have cooling system issues like the 03's but it is more common in these years. 03-07's respond well to mods but it takes it's toll. If you run a programmer on a 6.0L expect to replace the head gaskets at some point and be sure to install ARP studs when you do. MPG is anywhere from 12 to 20 mpg average.
2008-2009: Major cooling system issues. The radiators leak and there are 10 theory's why. The latest is that the dual thermostats are sticking and when they open super hot coolant is allowed into the radiator causing a rapid expansion of the cold coolant in the radiator. Eary builds will have the high pressure fuel pump harness become chaffed against the drive gear causing a no start concern. Injector supply tubes and fittings can crack and allow fuel into the crankcase. Lack of maintance causes excess fuel to build up in the crank case. Fuel can leak from the high pressure fuel pump into the crank case. When fuel is in the crank case it will reach the point where it is sucked back into the engine and the engine will either run a way or melt pistons. These trucks have bad fuel economy.

If I were to buy a Ford Diesel it would only be a 7.3.
I hual 6.0's out of Ford dealerships all the time. They are know as RAV Units(re aquired Vehicals.) They range from 03's all the way up. I hualed 6 this last week alone. They are fixed and ford sends them to the auction to get sold. I don't mind cause they're size and the way Ford pays I get more money for them.
I had a 99.5 7.3l and never had a real issue till my glow plugs went out at 275k. Don't get an early 99, just check the door and it will tell you. I drive a 6.6l LBZ 06 Duramax now with the allison 1000 6spd. I absolutly love my truck. Super quiet and will pull 30k with no problem stock! I don't think I will ever own another ford diesel unless they manage to get a cummins in it.

That's trick!
I love the way the 6.0 sounds straight piped. They do sound like jumbo jets. And 7.3s sound like helicopters

I love my 2006 F250, I owned since new, 50K miles on it, no problems, I only use it for hauling and long distances, diesel dont like to run short distances, if you going to turn it on, run it for the day, it will live longer.
