At 1:55 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, the Sheriff’s Communications Center received a call reporting a Rancho Cordova Police motorcycle officer was injured as a result of a collision on Coloma Road.

The RCPD motor unit was traveling on Coloma Road at Chardonay Drive when a vehicle collided with him. As a result of the collision, the 13-year veteran of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at Mercy San Juan Hospital.

Deputy Lawrence Canfield (43), a 13 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, had been assigned as a motor officer with the contract city of Rancho Cordova. Deputy Canfield, a second generation Deputy Sheriff, is survived by his wife, two children, parents, extended family, and his law enforcement brethren.

As a result of the fatal collision, the California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) will be handling this investigation.

Information about the memorial service is pending.
Deputy Lawrence Canfield, your Sheriff Departments brothers and sisters prayers and thoughts are with your family as they begin the mourning process.

...was that the accident where the rider lost his leg? i was listening to 98rock and a guy called in aorund that time saying he saw a leg on the highway from a bike crash.

im only 24, and i have had 7 of my childhood friend get killed in the war in iraq, that why i have respect for law enforcement because they put their lives in danger everyday to protect and serve....

has a funeral date been set?
