first time using it and this is just a test run. got a good as deal even came with class on learning basics,digital 1 and 2,slr specific and advance.and i definately need it.out of all the shots, 2 came in nice most of them where too bright.any suggestions welome like always.

White cars are hard to shoot because it really messes with the metering if the lighting isn't perfect.
a little trick I like to try is to set to spot metering, select a spot in the background that is mid-tone (sky for example) and lock the metering in there and then recompose, focus and shoot the subject.
Also play with the flash. A little fill flash might help with the foreground. I'd dial back the EV on the flash though or it will blow out the foreground. A little flash may help bring the Black rims to life.

My wife just picked up a D40 too. She bought a 55-200 lens with VR as well.
Lots of options.....it's going to take some getting used to.
