This is not to start a flame war. I let hidnn.o.s. replace my heater core this weekend. He did a very good job and went above and beyond. I think he even washed my car. I say think because my paint is really bad but the parts that aren't were shinny.
I'm posting this because there was so much talk about him and this subject along with other people who do work on the side. I had a good experience and would recommend him.

I dunno, I wasn't really fazed by doing the job to my 89, but my `97 needs a new core and I'm pretty worried about fucking up the A/C or air bag system when I do it

I've stayed away from the 94 & +'s because I'm unfamiliar with the passenger side air bag systems. I've heard it's really not difficult, but I'm not confident with it so I've left them alone.
Just look for some really good instructions online.
