excursion would be my pick...kinda sucks because the diesel gets about 14 mpg and the gas gets about 7-9 mpg.

Try to find an Excursion with a 7.3L PSD in it. They are harder to find but far more worth the wait rather than settling for a 6 uh oh.
I'd say forget the Suburban idea totally if you're looking to tow and get decent milage out of it. Towing with a Suburban say with an 8.1L gas engine you'd be looking somewhere around 8 to 10mpg TOPS with a gas Suburban depending upon the load you'd be towing give or take.

Are you getting one brand new? Because I looked at the new long ass expedition and those are pretty tight, and about as long as the excursion.

I had a hard time finding a turbo diesel excursion with under 100K on it with the 7.3L. Matter of fact I had to settle for a suburban since I didnt have 20K sitting around in cash I had to get a loan for it. Couldnt find an excursion with the 7.3 with low enough miles to finance.

Stick with Mustang talk honey. Let people who know the difference between a diesel injector pump and a spark plug give advise on what is going to tow best. Just look pretty and drive your car.

There's a blue or black V10 gasser Excursion for sale here in Modesto that started out @ $10K, and is now at $9200. Not sure of the mileage or other info. Seems like a good deal tho?

Suburban all the way! If the 5.3 isn't enough for your towing needs you can easily find a LQ4 or LQ9 (6.0L) block and swap the heads/intake/accessories etc over it for a cheap swap. Or you can just go all the way to the 2500 to get the 8.1L if gas mileage isnt as much of an issue.
