"Smog cop For eight years, Bruce Hotchkiss was a state smog inspector, busting smog technicians who illegally passed vehicles that should have flunked. Bruce says, "I'm a car guy and I've had my share of hot rods, but I believe every car must adhere to the law. Air pollution kills." Because of his long field experience, Bruce recently was picked to mediate conflicts between consumers and auto repair shops. "It's good work," he says, "but not nearly as rewarding as being a smog cop."

I have at Sac. Car was flaged in state computer when it was smoged The state inspector showed up the next day demanding to look at car. The tech didn't have the car there said he could bring it in the next morning. That night we did a cam swap, complete exhaust swap and other smog things(we had all the stock parts) The car passed. Friend still got fired LOL but no fine. The inspector told him the car was flaged at a visit to the track in Sac 100% Fact on this one I took the night off work to help him out.

2stangs, are you serious! That is some major BS. I can't believe those chicken shit bastards are showing up at the track! I guess I better take my plate off for now on, or put some cats back on the car which I have been considering.
Can they use the VIN # to find you?

If you trailer your car there and back I think you have no issues. If you know your car is illegal and you know what happens if you drive it on the streets. And you get caught. Why complain about it? Police dont make the law they enforce it. Its pretty much like any law out there. Violate it and you get punished.

I'll complain about it because SMOG laws are a bunch of BS. My car is basically only driven to and from the track and a few weekend drives here and there on the weekend. That is only 2 to 3k miles a year. The car runs really good. How much polluting could I really be doing with a few illegal parts? The guys that live 10 miles west and 20 miles north of me don't have to get their cars smogged. They work in the same place I do, or most likely further away so they drive a hell of a lot more and pollute more. How does this make sense?
Why are long tube headers illegal. If you put cats on and pass the emmissions out the tailpipe, who cares. I HATE SMOG!
If they just went by what came out the tailpipe, then it wouldn't bug me so much because that makes sense. It should not matter what the hell is on the car as long as it passes the sniffer.

I think you're missing the point. People are continually being stopped and cited even though they have a 100% legal car. Cops don't care if you have CARB #s or not. Their reply is always "Then it will be easy for you to clear it"

Thats not what was said, but I understand that happens as well. It was said this dude goes to car shows and see who has illegal stuff and then waits and sees who drives away with the illegal stuff on and pulls them over or jams them up at home. Cops pulling over random Stangs could be a by product of this as well. But I think I got the point just fine. You cant pick and choose which laws you want to break because it impedes your hobby.
I know I'll get flamed for this but hey its the truth. I dont like the smog law much either, but it is a law.

+1 they dont care if its legal or not... everything is legal in my car except for the CAI... because of a CAI my friend car got taken away and they said it was not street legal.. CAI actully improves gas millage and lowers emissions....
