Download this free anti-virus program
www.free.grisoft.com
Make sure you run the update after you install it. Also, install Spybot and Adaware. Run the updates on those too. they are also free.
Once you get those on your computer and updated, shutdown, unplug your cable for your DSL or cable, and then run all three. Hopefully that should clean it up.
Once you get all that shit taken care of get back on the internet and run Windows Update and make sure you have all the security patches installed.
Hopefully after that you will be good to go

did you run a scan with one of the virus tools mentioned? You can check the symantec website to see if there are any fixes for the virus that gets detected. If it was able to do that much I would say it has totally compromised your windows. At this point I would try to get as many files as you need on a back up hard drive or disks. Then do a low level format. But that is just me tho. Unfortunately once you have a virus installing a virus protection over it doesnt get it done half the time as it can hide in the registry or where ever. Try to get it detected, if you can check symantec for a fix, if not I would format. But back up some files. But scan them before putting them on a fresh computer

Run all those programs on "SAFE-MODE" then restart and see if that helps.

I sent him a PM telling him how to run safe mode, hopefully it works out. I have spent a few years chasing down viruses on friends computers and havent found one yet that I couldnt get rid of, it just takes time and patients to do it.

I've seen worse, which I've fixed. There are several steps you should take, if you don't feel like reinstalling your OS. Things I would do, off the top of my head:
1. DL SpyBot [from mozilla], run the updates, run scan. 2. Update your Virus protection, then run a scan and set it to delete. 3. Control Panel IE Options, I'd delete all my offline/online files and erase all cookies.
I mean, these things are ALL avoidable. Make sure you have a decent antivirus program eg. symantec and or mcafee. For XP users, use the built in functions such as system restore and run it manually once in a while. Also, turn on your auto-updates for patches and keep the Firewall service on. Last but not least, STOP SURFING PORN!

Looks like its a spyware/adware problem and not really a virus. Try downloading the newest version of Adware SE Personal. Its a really good program and also get CCleaner

I dunno man, if it was able to over ride windows settings at the .dll level and actually install a active X .exe as the screen saver, I wouldn't say just adware, (but it could very well be). I am pretty good with computers so I too would take the hard route and track it down. but if you are not too saavy, a backup and a format is the sure fire way to go. And at this point I would recommend Norton Ghost or another imaging software. I have images of all my computers both at home and at the office. So I can restore from a image. It's faster than scrambling to get cds and cd keys and all that jazz.
All in all I would format the HDD. Good luck in any event. PM if you need help or have some questions. [ June 21, 2007, 01:37 PM: Message edited by: N8 ]

Personally, I run a usb/firewire HDD and use the local disk only for the OS and apps. I turn on my disk when I need to read/write files and turn it off when I just need to use the box for surfing. This way, I know all my data's safe from being hacked [safer, nothing's really "Safe] and can restore the OS without having to worry about data integrity. By the way, I have 2 of these external drives and they are mirrored. I'm just paranoid like that. Like N8 said, if you're not too tech savy and you don't have a whole lot of data, I'd format it. Otherwise, just burn the data to CD and be done with it.

so you turn off whatever hard drive you're not using? never thought of that! Is it wise to have all your pics, music,DL's etc on the slave drive and keep it off til you need it? When most system failures happen do they corrupt the OS drive? I see everyone backs up their data, is it best to run "Back-up to a different drive (ie: 'D' drive) or to a CD?

Don't see it as local hard drives where you need to set up "Master/Slave" settings. It's a USB device that acts as storage and runs just like a mouse or USB keyboard. Yes, the drives I use have a switch to turn on and off. I only turn it on when I need to access the data and or save to that drive. I do this because if my system ever gets compromised, I know my data is intact and reliable since most virus' corrupt the OS and renders it useless. If this ever happens to me, my data, eg files, mp3's, pics, etc., will never be touched since it's hardly ever on so nothing can touch it. Make sense? It's kind of like a hard drive and backup system. So if my OS is useless, I can reinstall my OS and just turn my drive back on, or just connect the drive to my laptop and get the data that way.
