High-Speed Chases End On Same San Rafael Curve
POSTED: 11:13 am PDT April 13, 2006
SAN RAFAEL -- Police coincidentally wrapped up two separate car chases Wednesday night at the same 90-degree turn on Andersen Drive in San Rafael.
The first pursuit started in the 900 block of Andersen Drive at around 7 p.m. after an officer pulled over a Honda Accord for running a stop sign. The driver of the Honda stopped the car, a passenger got out and then the driver sped off, according to police.
The officer followed the Honda until it entered the sudden and wet curve and lost control, crashing into the guardrail in front of the Central Marin Sanitation Agency.
The driver of the Honda, later identified as 23-year-old Larkspur resident Jesse Starr, jumped over the guardrail and attempted to flee before the officer caught up with him and made an arrest, according to the San Rafael Police Department.
While officers were arresting Starr, another high-speed chase was developing on U.S. Highway 101.
The Marin County Sheriff's Office had notified San Rafael police that a suspect had just exited the highway at Lincoln Avenue in a stolen Acura Integra. Officers briefly lost the Acura during the pursuit, but it was spotted 30 seconds later driving east on the same Andersen Drive straightaway.
A sergeant radioed ahead and gave a heads up to the officers still on the scene of the first incident. The officers were able to set out two sets of spike strips in different locations before the Acura made it to the curve, but they proved unnecessary as the speeding car lost control on the slippery right turn and hit the Honda and a San Rafael police car.
Police reported, however, that the spike strips managed to flatten the right-front tire of an uninvolved Nissan Frontier that was driving behind the Acura.
A detective who was searching the inside of the Honda barely managed to jump to safety after an officer on the scene yelled a warning just before the collision, police reported.
Nobody was reported injured in either collision. The unidentified driver of the Acura was taken into custody. Starr was booked at Marin County jail on suspicion of possession and transporting of a controlled substance, hit and run, evading a peace officer, resisting arrest and violation of probation.
