Maaco VS Earl Schieb
Which one is a better place to paint your car? I know they are cheap but I need a good quick paint job. Thanks

If you do the prep work, maaco does some pretty decent jobs for the price.

Earl schieb does a decent job at painting, but their paint is junk. Maaco is definitly better, and dont let them charge you more than you want to spend. They quoted me $1650 to do body work and paint. I told them that I did not want to spend more than $1000 on it, and he said "ok I will do it all for $1000" just like that. He did not even think about it. Then when it was done there was a lot of dirt in the paint, and they painted it again for free. Your best bet may be to find someone that does painting on the side.

In Sac on Watt, the old Earl schieb got turned into a MACO. Two in one. I had my tonneau cover painted there and it was fine. My brother got a lot more and he got a little pissed off at them.

does either shop sand and buff the cars after painting them...or do they just spray them and thats it? Also, I heard that they dont mask off the cars very well, so I would strip it down and mask everything myself.

I know when I went to the local MAACO to get the front end painted, the cheaper paint jobs used a single stage paint process VS the 2 stage. Just keep that in mind too!

This is no a while back my friend took his 64 stang to them (earl Schieb) to have a quick coat shot on it for the summertime (they were running 99 dollar specials back then). He knew it wouldnt last long. They painted the car, but didnt even wash it prior to doing so, they actually painted over some bird shit. This was the one in San Jose, if I am not mistaking it is close to downtown if it is still there.

Both of those places suck! If you want a quality paint job you will have to spend a little more money or look for someone who does side work

It deppends on how much you care about your car, you always get what you pay for. I would rather have a car with a faded original paint job than some crap that will peel off in the neer future. I have seen cars ruined by those places, over spray on wheels and everywere else, mask lines. A lot of the quality comes from prep and then polish, you should tear down as much as possible. Maacos embassidor special $199

some people are on a budget and just want a budget paint job. sure, you get what you pay for, but sometimes you can only pay so much. so rather than making useless posts, why not try making a contributive one? or none at all?
I've been told that Maacos are privately owned, so one shop can do super shitty work while the one across town does quality work. so try asking the shops to see cars that they've actually done and are doing [ March 24, 2006, 06:08 PM: Message edited by: z pyro ]

If you want to pay $99-500 for a paint job that will last you ONE whole year, go ahead.
I did contribute to this post by saying they do crappy paint jobs. You really think you are getting a good deal when it they paint over bird shit?
My x-gf got paid $400 to get her car painted at Earl Schieb and they didn't even paint the inner door wells. Nonetheless, the rest of the car flaked off in about a year.
They paint about 5-10 cars per day per booth. If you want to get shafted and front the money to prove me wrong go ahead. Otherwise save up and get a quality one.

I hooked up with a dude here on the board that is painting my car for a good price and his work is good. I also just met another dude here in stockton that has a shop that will paint my car for cheap on the side. Why am I saying this? Because I think you should look around and ask around. You can find someone doing it on the side and get a A1 paint for less than the big boys but same quality. But maybe not as cheap as Maaco and ES. Dont go cheap unless you are doing it to sell your car for a lil more.

I painted my daily driver there, only spent a $1100 for them prepping, sanding, fixing a bunch of dings. It also included a 2-stage paint job with Dupont and clear coat. It came out pretty good for what I paid and a 5 year warranty toward chipping and fading. I've seen cars there that spent about $2500 one of them a 68 coupe that came out real good.

You get what you pay for and I have yet to find super quality work from a side jober.
However for cars that I don't plan on keeping for super long time those side jobers have given me decent work for the price.
I do have my shop to send cars that I plan on keeping for long time.
Price per paint is upwards of 4K for the usual stuff I ask for. To this day I have yet to find a better quality paint job.
