I was wondering if anyone has dealt with transporting a car with expired tags. I may be picking up a car thats registered, but not smogged, therefore it has expired stickers. If I make a Bill of Sale stating that it was sold As-Is, can I show that to the cop if I were to get pulled over? Any other suggestions on how to do this? The drive is about 1.5 hrs.

Just have the bill of sale on you when you transport. Should be good enough for the officer if you get pulled over.

i know I can tow it, but I dont want to really go through the hassle of renting a trailer and all that...
If I do drive it, can they cite me if I get pulled over...even if I show them that I just bought the car that day and it says As-Is on the bill of sale?

Stating that you bought the car "As is" does not matter in regards to expired tags. Call the DMV and see how long the grace period is when you buy a new car.
I have a feeling a cop might be more lenient if you could prove you just bought the car that day, but I wouldn't risk it. Renting one of those small two wheel tows from Uhaul shouldn't be a huge hassle.

if the fee's are not that high too make them current, pay them and out the car in your name and get a temp moving permit! i had to get that when i got the LX, so if you get pulled over or anything you have more proof that its yours. and you can drive it for a month. ![[Cool]](cool.gif)

well...the car is currently registered, but he didnt get the sticker yet because he hasn't smogged the car. If that makes any difference, let me know. Thanks!

They can impound / tow the car from you if you drive it without a smog cert, the registration papers it has now state that it is not an operating permit.
you can go to the dmv and get a temporary tag to be able to drive it, otherwise you have to tow it to be legal. [ February 15, 2006, 03:52 PM: Message edited by: blind ]

what they said. If yo have AAA membership you can go and ask for an operating permit. it's usually good for only for one day or 5 days. they'll more than likely want to give yo the shortest one. you can do the same thing at the dmv but lines ae usually a bit longer there.

so what do I have to do to get a temporary tag at DMV? What papers would I need to show them?

its only an hour and a half....drive that shit home cop pulls you over just play dumb,...and don't attract attention by driving dumb.
ps...even if you get a two wheeled trailer its still against the law to have any of the wheels of the car rolling on the ground with expired tags. You'd have to get a flatbed. [ February 15, 2006, 07:47 PM: Message edited by: Jdub07 ]

If it has been unregistered for 6 months then they can tow it, if its less then that then they just cite you. If all the dmv fees are paid then you can get a temp permit. If its being towed and the reg is out 6 months then all 4 tires need to be off the ground, so no dollys. that should cover it.
