They are pretty nice for commuters.
My friend has one with 100k on it and a 12" JL DVC in the back with 17" rims. Looks nice and hits pretty hard in the back for a focus. Other than a flat tire, he's had no problems from the car mechanically.

If you are looking for a cheap and boring but practical commute car you should check out the Scion XA. They get 38 MPG and only cost $13k.

SVT Focus corner really well and have a great set up suspension, BUT they're pretty darn slow(mid 15's)...However if you get one of the later ZX3 Focus' (I forget what years) but with bolt on's you should be in the 14's...If I'm not mistaken, with just exhaust and intake, a late model ZX3 will dyno around 140fwhp and that's about the same as an SVT model...
Ask John/BlowN67 about his Focus...

I drove several ZX3 and two SVT Focuses (and a Subaru Outback Sport and Vibe GT) before buying the GTI.
ALL of the Focuses I drove had grinding brakes off of the factory floor, including both SVTs. The dealers pushed this off on me as "normal", so I sat my ass down and read hundreds of Focus reviews online. I found a lot of people reporting major brake problems at 10k, 20k miles.
In the end, the decision was either a ZX3 or the GTI, and I made my decision based on the GTI's extra power (~180hp, ~170ft/lbs) and better audio. I even had A Plan on the Focus, so I wound up shelling out about twice as much out of pocket to go with the GTI.

Like was said above, if it is an svt, it could be a fun efficient commuter car.
Other than that

Commuter? Look for a used Civic.
Im sorry but I had a Focus for a company vehicle for a year and the thing was a POS. I now have bought my own commuter, different job, and at 185,000 miles my Civic feels better, drives better, gets better mileage, etc then the Focus I had got brand new. My high mileage Civic feels less cheap them the Focus did with barely any miles on it.
BTW.. my Civic is a 95... the Focus I had was a 2002.

What a coincidence... if you still decide you want a Focus. I have a friend that has on with about 75K miles on it... 2dr hatch... blue.. I think hes trying to get something like $5000 for it. He currently uses it for a commuter from Yuba City to Sac daily.
PM me if you want his #.
