Does anyone know how youcan tell if a motor has really been rebuilt. I know the seller can say all they want, but without receipts, how can I really tell? Are there things to look for? Thanks

You can do a leakdown or compression test.

Other than taking the engine apart and looking for new parts, the person should have receipts of the work.

I have seen a motor cleaned and painted with someone trying to pass it off as rebuilt. Most people will paint the block before final assembly. Try to check for unpainted head bolts, freeze plugs or any other bolt on items without overspray.

put the engine on an engine stand, flip it over and take off the oil pan, then remove a couple of the bearing caps and checkout the rod bearings and crank bearings.

Pull the valve covers and see if they're clean inside. If you're real energetic, pull the heads and check for carbon build-up.

If I was the sellar I would not let someone take my engine out. He should be cool with letting you pull the valve covers though
