I have a pretty good job at a well established ISP in downtown SF. There are only 4 people in my office but about 225 nationwide. My boss works back in Wash DC. If I manage my time and meetings well enough, I can get off work everyday at around 2pm...hell I can even work from home a couple times a week if I want. My boss could care less where I work as long as I don't fall behind on projects. Next year, I'll be up to 3 weeks paid vacation time too.

I think I'm going to be offered basically the same job with a competitor of ours for about 7k a year more. It's a small firm (10 employees) and only does business in the SF bay area. They have told me that they would like to be purchased by a bigger company within 5 years or so. I would be working in the same office with the President, CEO, etc. and my time in the actual office will greatly increase. The one good thing about this company is that they currently have a sweet partnership with PG&E and Verizon.

Would you guys leave for 7k more a year or stay where you're comfortable?

NOTE: I wasn't looking for a job but my wife thinks I should take the extra money...

That's the thing...I'm not sure how long it will last. If they're bought in a few years, it may give me a pretty good payout but then again it may not. I may not have a job if they're bought too...

I've got three kids and a hefty mortgage. I'm not sure if I want to gamble my future for only 7k more a year. That's only 291 more a paycheck before taxes.

Thanks guys...

My wife says she'll support any decision I make but I still have the feeling she thinks I should take the new one. [Frown] She lives more for the moment and doesn't think about the future.

just tell her the extra 291 per paychecks will go into the mustang, then she might want you to keep the current job and you can keep hiding stuff in the trunk [Big Grin]

seriously, keep the job you have now, its seems a lot more secure, they are going to be around in a year, this small isp, who knows

with the new job, no more friday racing, thats for sure [Frown]

Man you're good...I have Lakewood 50/50s and my window switch hiding in there now. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Yeah you guys are right, I'll probably stick with my current job. I've been through a buyout and a relocation with my last two jobs and don't want to even think about changing positions right now.

Trust me Friday night racing was on my list of pros and cons... [Whoo Whooooo!]

If you love the job, the hours, the work, and the people you work with, I would not leave unless there was some serious long term advancement potential in the new job.

You can use the offer to get more $$$ from your current employer. Just tell them straight up what they are offering you, and see if they will match it. It has worked for me in the past [Wink]

i'd say stay at your current job. try getting a raise.. but don't risk moving into a new place, specially if they have made it clear that they plan on being purchased by a larger corporation.
If you were single with no mayor resposabilities, like myself, then i'd say go for it, but having a family and a morgage puts everything into perspective.

Good luck. [patriot]

Thanks guys...

I'll most likely stick put. I have until the end of the month to think more about it.

The current company I work for bought the last ISP startup I worked for. There was about an 8 month period where we didn't know if we would have jobs or not. It sucked big time.

Exactly...we're not hard up for money and right now I'm not tied down to a desk by a phone. My work cell is the only phone they use for me. I can come and go as I please as long as I'm always caught up on my stuff. I'm on the road a lot too and I get 48.5 cents a mile compensation. I know gas is expensive now but 48.5 cents a mile is way more than enough to cover it. That extra bit will add up too. My last 3 week reinbursment check was $583 for 1200 miles

well said. Bro I would think twice about this move. If you already have a stable job that you like why move? Money? what if the other company doesn't like and decided to let you go?????

I understand you must take a chance so try this...If you have to leave, leave on good terms, tell your boss you have to do this to see whats out there. May be even try to work part time at your job, JUST IN CASE you don't like the new job you can come back. Just becarefull.

Yeah I'm not leaving...

I may tell my boss that I turned down a different job for more money just so he knows I'm loyal.

I don't like changing jobs unless I absolutely have to. Besides my wife works too and we make almost exactly the same as each other.

Check this out...There was another tech at our current job that was there when my coworker and I came on board. He quit two weeks after we were hired to go to a different job for more money. He was layed off about 2 months later and has yest to find another job. That was in September of 2004. [Eek!] [Eek!] [Eek!] He calls every once in a while to see if we want to contract him out to do stuff for us. [dance]

Like someone else said...if I was single with no kids then yes I'd probably try it out but there's too much risk for me at this time.

Thanks guys...
