My lady is in the market for one and just wanted to see what you guys recomend?
She will use it mainly for surfing the net and multimedia type stuff (pics, movies, music, etc.)
We would like to stick to a budget of $1000 or less.
Let's hear your opinions or please post links to stuff on sale (i know a lot of guys here work-on/ sell computer type stuff)
Thanks

IBM Thinkpad.Killer system.Have had 2.Most likely would still have my original one if it wasnt for spilling a beer on it I dont suggest the Dell line.I Almost got one but they are really low quality computers and you get what you pay for so I got another thinkpad.

Had a Dell desktop and wasn't too thrilled with it.
How are Toshiba brand laptops?
And what kind of processor speed should i be looking for i figure 512mb ram and about 60-80g hard drive will suffice?

sony vaio's are generally the fastest in any price category, unless you get a stupid expensive alienware or something like that.
I've owned several IBM's and Dell's, the IBM's are built better but the dells have nicer components

I have an HP with a Celeron M (not the latest) 802.11G and a dvd burner built in. I got it for under 1k, and its even less now... it does GREAT on battery life, most of these guys forgot to mention their battery life
good luck, SHOP AROUND! and take into account the warranty

we got a Dell then when it was time for customer support we got some middle eastern that I could hardly understand on the phone since theiy farm out their customer support over seas.
sent it back got a refund and purchased a Fujitsu LIfe book, much better quality 10 times the support, better speakers, screan, more options. but came with a 2200 price tag.
