Originally posted by 93PONY: [qb] To make good power you need good quality parts....along with proper installation. 1.72 'Cobra' rockers are poor quality crane rockers. I've had a few of them fail when used with heavy valvesprings & aggressive camshafts. The E cam is not the best camshaft available that'll pass smog. A stock Cobra intake manifold is VERY restrictive. Fully porting the lower only gets you half way. Having the upper cut apart, fully ported, & shortening the runners is expensive (I'm working on one now & can post some pics). & in the end at best it'll be equivilent to an Edelbrock Performer. For N/A power, the Cobra is a poor choice. However, in the end you can still make good power with a Cobra intake if you choose your parts correctly & know the limitations of the Intake. Here's an example of a 'nicely done' 93 Cobra motor with AFR's: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2003/06/afrinstall/ One thing to remember, HP = (TQ/5252)*RPM In other words, if your motor peaks before ~5900-6000rpm you will make more TQ than HP. If the motor peaks above 6000rpm you will make more HP than TQ. A Cobra intake manifold will make it extremely difficult to pull the RPM needed to make 320/320. & in order to make 320HP with a Cobra intake on a 302 you'd need roughly 360RWTQ. Haven't seen that done yet on a stock bottom end. The most I've seen is 340RWTQ....which will net you just over 300RWHP with the restrictive Cobra intake. Swapping to an RPM intake & larger camshaft will raise the RPM & you'd be exchanging low-end TQ for high RPM HP. Also note: There are no shorty headers that can 'swallow' the wide AFR exhaust port. Port-matching of the header flange will be neccessary. [/qb]
Good article...the aftermarket is definitely better now...the most power I've had on a stock shortblock was 315/320-ish but that was with afr 165's, rpm intake, and lunati cam (similar specs to tfs1) but it ripped hard....too bad it didn't rip that hard when it got sprayed to death and died after like 100 nitrous passes....lol [/QB]
