quote: Miami Arson Suspect Kills Self On Jet; Flight Diverted To Denver
POSTED: 2:38 pm EST February 9, 2006 UPDATED: 4:14 pm EST February 9, 2006
DENVER -- A man accused of causing a nearly $1 million fire at a Miami auto dealership hanged himself in an airplane lavatory, and the flight was diverted to Denver after his body was discovered, authorities said Thursday.
GET WFTV NEWS HEADLINES BY EMAIL 9 a.m. Headlines Noon Headlines 4 p.m. Headlines News of the Strange Breaking News Alerts The body of Gerald Georgettis, 56, was found on Wednesday in a lavatory on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles, Denver medical examiner's spokeswoman Michelle Weiss-Samaras said.
The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide.
Miami-Dade County Detective Robert Williams said Georgettis was charged with arson and felony criminal mischief after allegedly driving his new Ford Escape through the Metro Ford dealership showroom, pouring gasoline on it and lighting it. Police have said he was upset about the price he paid.
Fire officials said the blaze burned about a dozen cars, including a $150,000 limited-edition 2006 Ford GT. Only 250 such cars were made.
Georgettis was released Sunday on a $1,500 bond.
Williams declined to say why Georgettis might have taken his own life, saying that would be inappropriate speculation.
Messages left at the last known addresses for Georgettis and his former wife were not immediately returned.
Denver police detective Virginia Lopez said no other passengers on the United flight were ever in danger.
"Right now, everything leads us to believe the male involved did commit suicide," she said.
Lopez said she did not know whether Georgettis left a note.
United spokesman Jeff Green said the plane landed at the Denver airport Wednesday afternoon because of a medical emergency involving a passenger, but he would not comment further.
Last month, the El Paso County coroner ruled that a Sacramento, Calif., woman had committed suicide on an America West flight between Cleveland and Phoenix by overdosing on morphine. That flight made an unscheduled landing Jan. 6 in Colorado Springs after Stephanie Marson was found unconscious in her seat.

While it sounds stupid, "hanged himself" is actually the correct grammar when talking about death.
I don't understand why he was upset with the price. If he was so upset maybe he shouldn't have bought the car in the first place.
