I think you are confusing the .50AE (Desert Eagle pistol cartridge) with the far larger and more powerful .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun) round used in Barret light 50 sniper rifles.
The .50 BMG round would not fit in the lower receiver of an AR15, so I think that advertisment is a bit misleading.
Keep your AR15 as a rifle for long range and buy a pistol for medium to short range.
For a pistol I prefer a .40 as a good balance between "stopping power" and recoil management.
Here is my AR15

I heard they used to be $1-2 a round. I havent looked into them in a while but last I checked they're always low on parts (receivers) and ammo is always on back order.

That's not needed if you know how to shoot.

Not the bmg or hand gun version. It a beowolf round it in between those two for size, about the size of you middle finger and packs alot of punch. Only good to 200yds or less. Its a heavy hunting round or one for blowing shit up.

My buddy bought one of the first 50 beowulf uppers from Alexander Arms. Its built nice and its fun to shoot but ammo is crazy expensive and often backordered. Honestly, unless you have money to burn, its not a great purchase. I'd go with a 6.8spc before a 50 beo.

Its a 300 grain .50 caliber. Very comparable to a .50AE. Looks like they just lengthened the cartridge to make it a hotter load. This also makes sure that you can only buy the ammunition from them lol
The standard 5.56mm round the AR15 fires will give you better accuracy over long distances (400 to 600 m), and better penetration if your target is hiding behind cover.
I see no point converting a rifle to a pistol round, but to each their own.

It's not a 50 BMG its a propietary round. My first AR build was this, I still own it, and its fun to shoot. Ammo is in stock at my local him stores. I have a few hundred in a diffrebnt grains among with new brass.
Average cost per round is $1.25 ish for retail stuff. I haven't reloaded any of my own yet. My beowulf hasu a custom engraved dust cover and magazines.

I was thinking of making a 50 beowolf with my spare lower, since I already have a 5.56. Was between that and 458socom, but either would be impractical for me since I don't reload or care to spend the money on these cartridges. Now I'm thinking 300blackout or the other simaler cartridge. I need to do some research I have been out of the ar's for a bit. [ September 20, 2011, 05:06 PM: Message edited by: Bent70 ]

But it's got waaay too much penetration
Unless you want to shoot the guy in your house as well as the other guy breaking in next door, I stick with something lower velocity....but hey

the Upper that shoots the BMG only uses the lower for the buttstock, grip and FCG. it is a bolt action setup like someone posted above.
if you are a gun owner and will actually put in range time a pistol works for HD. but if you want something easy, cheap, and effective and dont want to shoot someone in another room or next door go shot gun.
